The Artists Statement for the Handmaiden..
“Art is the handmaid of Human Good” and the Handmaiden delivers this message by holding art in her hands. She communicates with us, letting us know that art is everywhere, in our hands, above and below, and in ourselves.
I chose the material, 26 gauge Copper wire, for its properties of communication, flexibility, and color. Copper is used to transfer sound, communication, energy. It’s all around us, yet we hardly ever see it as it is here, stripped bare, exposed to the elements.
The Handmaiden was created using the above copper wire, and size 10 and 17 knitting needles. Her Bodice was knit using short row techniques, and her skirt was knit from the bottom to top, and then sewn into her bodice. Hands and face were knit separately and attached later. She was knit to my own proportions.
Over 2000 feet of copper wire was used in making the Handmaiden, as the Scrolls show progresses, she will be decorated with scraps of fabric from the other scrolls project, and become more solid through further communication of the art around her. This was my goal with the Handmaiden, art that offers more art, and communicates to the world around it.
