Drabble: 'Heading Out' (J/E - G)

Nov 19, 2012 14:48

With Thanksgiving Week off, there is time for writing -- even with my little grandson's birthday celebration this last weekend and everyone visiting over Thanksgiving.

Here is a 200 word response to the current drabble challenge at blackpearlsails, a "deleted scene" from DMC, set in Jack's cabin shortly after the Pearl sets sail from Tortuga with those "hundred souls"...

~ Heading Out ~

There was room for two in his (admittedly rumpled, and less than pristine) bed, but she’d none of that (probably for the best), though she did seem happy enough to accept the protection of his cabin and the offer of a hammock. He fetched said hammock from behind a sea chest, and as he straightened he noticed she was eyeing him speculatively, her smile satirical. He raised a brow. “What?”

She made no effort to dissemble. “Are you often approached by sailors looking for the man I love? Your reply to me back there on the dock seemed awfully pat.”

… my first and only love is the sea… Ah, yes. “It’s been known to happen. I am Captain Jack Sparrow.” He smirked (modestly). “And no harm in lettin’ ‘em down easy. I ain’t a cruel man.”

She chuckled. “No. You’re many things, but not that.”

Regret was a waste of time, of course, but as she obligingly took one end of the hammock and together they hung it from its hooks in the carved beam overhead, Jack winced just a little at the precise nature of some of those many things and the unfortunate inevitability of her discovering them.
