Kusturica Commissions Johnny Depp Statue in Serbia

Text by Bojana Barlovac for Balkan Insight

6 October 2009 | Famed Serbian director Emir Kusturica has decided to build a monument in honour of his friend, movie star Johnny Depp.
Daily Blic reports that a life-size statue of the actor will be unveiled, sporting the costume worn by his character in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. The actor reportedly liked the idea, and Kusturica asked him for his exact body measurements.

"I laughed yesterday when I got the measurements of his body. If I was a tailor it would probably be normal for me, but I was really surprised when he sent me the dimensions of his head, forehead, shoulders, waist and other body parts. I can imagine how many women would like to know these dimensions,” the daily quoted Kusturica as saying.

The statue will be placed in Andrei Tarkovsky Square in Drvengrad - a faux traditional Serbian village Kusturica built for the filming of Life is a Miracle, which is now an uninhabited tourist attraction. The sculptor will be Serbian artist Dragan Nikolic Baja.

The unveiling of the statue is scheduled to take place during the next Kustendorf Film and Music festival in Drvengrad, which will feature a retrospective of Depp’s movies. The renowned actor will be the guest of honour for the occasion.

Kusturica, has won some of Europe's greatest film awards, including the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival, two Golden Palms at Cannes and the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.

He is now working on a new movie, Seven Friends of Pancho Villa and the Woman with Six Fingers. Production is scheduled to start at the end of next year. Beside Depp, the main roles will be taken by Hollywood star Salma Hayek and famous Serbian actor Miki Manojlovic.
