Harry Potter?

It's colder in Santa Clarita than I thought it would be. Downright chilly. And I'm freezing because I was too lazy to do my laundry yesterday, so now I suffer. I had to steal a pair of socks from my mom's drawer because I didn't pack any extras of my own. However, I will soon have a whole load of toasty warm socks as the whites are now going into the dryer.

I seriously haven't done that much since I got home on Saturday afternoon. Vincent and I got into Santa Clarita at 3pm. I dropped him off at aunt Yolanda's house and I stuck around there for about an hour, just chatting with Yolanda. Mostly talking about baby Julian. I also had an interesting conversation with her about school. She asked me what English majors "do." She had a misunderstanding of what English majors study. I was quick to let her know that English majors really do "work." I think I basically ended up saying that English was really a major about agrumentation and analysis. It's also closely related to history as we study literary movements, and philospohy, as we often use different critical modes to discuss that in relation to the literature. I also extolled the values of learning psychology and sociology through reading rendered experiences in literature.

The rest of this weekend has been spent with my parents and the pets. Currently, Rosie is climbing all over me in the computer room, meowing to be fed. She seems upset.

Saturday night, I went to Target and Pier 1 with my mom and dad to shop for the kids in our life. My parents signed up to buy two presents for underprivilaged kids through their church, so I helped them pick things that 9-13 year old kids would like (in case you were wondering what we picked, it was the new "Twister Moves" game -- a mix of Twister and D.D.R.-- and a Discman). We also scoured the store for something for Elena, my dad's god-daughter. We picked up a "Felicity" DVD (From the American Girls Collection) and I chose a set of decorative lights to hang in her room, which are shaped like little pink and purple tiaras. They are so cute. I know she will flip out when she gets them. We also debating about what else to get her. We decided on getting her some books, but we haven't figured out which ones. I'm thinking of getting her more "American Girls" books, but my mom wants to buy her the first Harry Potter book, as she hasn't read any of them yet. Since I don't know too much about the actual Harry Potter books, can someone answer this question: Would a ten-year old girl enjoy the first Harry Potter book? She's a year behind in reading levels, from what I hear, so would a 10 year old girl who is slightly behind in reading be able to read the book on her own? Please, give me some advice.

I have a feeling that I will be renting a lot of movies over this Winter Break. My dad signed up for MVP again at Hollywood Video, so I can rent virtually any movie I want for free. I will definitely go get Donnie Darko. So far this weekend, I've seen March of the Penguins, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, and Cinderella Man. Tonight, we will be watching The Skeleton Key. Not much else to report here.

Those of you who are still taking finals, good luck. Everyone else who is home for break, I need to hang out with you.
