Fic: Defying Gravity

Nov 12, 2009 21:36

Introducing my first Glee fic ever!!! This is the first thing I've ever written so far that isn't Psych related. Anyway, WoOt!
Title: Defying Gravity
Author: Squeedle
geekerific_1017
Pairing: Purt or Puckurt, Puck/Kurt
Word Count: 2,157 Quite possibly the longest oneshot I've written thus far.
Rating: I always rate things T but I think this is more PG13
Notes/Warning: There's not really much to worry about here. Well, except for maybe the fact that I'm a newbie when it comes to writing in the Glee fandom. I think my Puck is OOC but I'll you decide.

Puck couldn’t understand it. Why would someone who worked so hard to attain something just purposely let it slip away? Puck saw the hope in Kurt’s eyes the day he requested to audition for the ‘Defying Gravity’ solo. Puck saw that same hope fade to hurt when Mr. Shuester objected. More than that though he saw the fierce determination flare up in Kurt’s eyes. A fierce determination that grew more heated and more passionate with each passing minute. Puck knew from that moment that nothing would stop him from getting that solo. Nothing would stand in Kurt Hummel’s way.

So why did he purposely flub that note?

It wracked Puck’s brain for a whole week before he finally said ‘screw it’ and asked Kurt himself.

Puck didn’t even need to put effort into looking for Kurt. Ever since the ‘diva-off’ Kurt spent most of his free periods and lunch sitting at the piano in the music room.

Puck was able to slip into the room unnoticed but when he tried to speak his breath caught in his throat. The way the sun was shining on Kurt’s face…it had an almost magical quality to it. It somehow made his eyes shine much brighter than usual. I didn’t know Kurt had eyes that blue.

This thought shocked him. Since when did he start thinking about Kurt like that? Since when did he start thinking about Kurt as Kurt? It’s not as if he actually liked him or anything. Puck was a dude damn it and dudes don’t think about other dudes like that. Even though certain other dudes have extremely gorgeous blue eyes that another dude could get lost in and a shapely body that called out in a way that no other dude could ignore and-

“What are you doing here Puckerman?”

Puck looked up and saw that Kurt had moved away from the piano and was now standing in front of it with his hands on his hips. His nice, shapely hips that - Damn it, I don’t think of dudes that way, stop it!

“What? A dude can’t hang out in his school’s gay music room when he feels like it?” Puck asked indignantly. He tried to look cool and threatening when he said it, he really did, but it’s kind of hard to look cool and threatening (especially threatening) to someone that you were just thinking about in a more-than-platonic way.

Kurt just rolled his eyes and sat back down on the piano bench. He struck a few of the keys before he spoke.

“I’m not in the mood for your…you-ness Puckerman and I would greatly appreciate it if you left.” He didn’t even look up as he said it and for some unnatural reason this irritated Puck. The least the guy could do is look at a person when he’s trying to kick them out.

So Puck did what he did best…

“What if I don’t feel like it?” He asked as he childishly crossed his arms in front of him. The only response it earned him was more eye-rolling.

Silence fell between them and stretched as far as it could as Puck walked forward to lean against the piano. He watched as Kurt struck a series of different keys and listened to the way all the random notes fell in tune with each other. As he watched and listened, Puck debated with himself on whether or not he should ask Kurt the question he’d been longing to ask for the passed week. Would Kurt even answer him if he asked? Sure, they we’re getting along with each other better now but Puck hadn’t exactly been the best person to him in the past. Why should Kurt answer
any question Puck has?

Puck shook his head and took a deep breath, trying to be as nonchalant as he could.

“So why did you throw that competition with Rachel?” When the question ended so did the music. Kurt’s fingers hovered over the piano’s keys, shaking with the need to glide across them, itching to play those random notes again. He hesitated for a few moments before answering Puck.

“I didn’t throw the competition I just couldn’t hit that note. Rachel won, fair and square.” Again, Kurt said it without looking at him and Puck narrowed his eyes a bit. As Kurt’s fingers scurried across the piano’s keys once more Puck sat on the bench alongside him and brought his hands up to slam down on the keys eliciting a surprised squawk from Kurt. At least he was finally looking at him.

“What the hell is your problem?!” Kurt huffed. Puck expected him to stand up with his hands on his hips again but he just sat there looking at Puck as if he’d grown a second head.

“My problem is you! You made a big deal about auditioning for that damn solo and then you just threw it away like it was nothing! You screwed it up on purpose. Why?”

For a moment Kurt looked as if he would answer Puck with the truth but he just turned back to the piano.

“I told you, I couldn’t hit that note. Mr. Shuester was right; it was out of my range.”

Puck felt something bubble up in his chest. He wasn’t quite sure what it was but it made him grab Kurt’s jaw and force him to look at him.

“Try telling that to somebody who wasn’t standing outside while you were practicing, to someone who didn’t hear you hit that note again and again without even trying.”

Puck let go of Kurt’s jaw and was thankful that he didn’t look away.

“You heard me?”

Puck decided not to answer him. He didn’t exactly want to make it known that he had been standing right outside the music room when Kurt was practicing. He didn’t want Kurt to know that he stood there for a full two hours just listening to his voice, didn’t want him to know that he actually enjoyed those two hours. Puck had told himself that the only reason he stood there listening was because he imagined that it was some random hot chick, not Kurt. He knew that wasn’t exactly the truth but lying was so much better than the truth.

In other words, Puck was a hypocrite.

“So why did you throw the competition?”

Kurt took a deep breath and looked away as he spoke.

“The day before the diva-off my dad got an anonymous call at work, some jerk called to tell him that his son was a fag. I quite frankly didn’t care, I’m used to it by now but my dad isn’t and honestly I don’t want him to be…he shouldn’t have to be. Me singing that song in front of tons of people would just give the bigots more ammunition. It would only provoke more anonymous calls, more taunts, more cruel pranks and while I’m used to all that my dad isn’t. I can’t do that to him, I won’t. That’s why I purposely tanked the audition.”

The words had been so soft and rushed that it took Puck a couple moments to sort them all out. When he did though he opened his mouth to speak but Kurt beat him to it.

“The bell is going to ring any second now; I need to get to class.” And with that Kurt hurried out of the room leaving no opportunity for Puck to respond to him.

Puck sat down at the piano, fingering random keys like Kurt had done as he thought over Kurt’s words.

“The day before the diva-off my dad got an anonymous call at work, some jerk called to tell him that his son was a fag.”

His eyes narrowed as he began to remember a fairly short prank call he’d heard someone make after football practice sometime last week.

“Dude, Puck, check this out man.”

Puck didn’t even know who the dude was. Sure, they were on the football team together but the only team members he hung out with were Finn, Mike, and Matt. All the other members were more of acquaintances than anything else. He remembered as the nameless kid laughed as he dialed a number on his phone.

“Your son is a fag.”

He hung up after that and Puck couldn’t help but think about how much of an idiot the kid was. Prank calling was for elementary school kids.

“You’re an idiot Eric.”

“Uh, my name’s Greg.”

Puck jumped up from the piano bench as he remembered the kid’s name - Greg, Greg Simmons or Simons or something like that - and he smirked as he left the music room. After football practice Greg I’m-Cool-‘Cause-I-Prank-Call was going to get the ass-kicking he deserved. He wasn’t exactly sure why he was going to do it but he told himself that it was for Kurt and there was nothing gay about beating up some guy in Kurt’s defense. He was just trying to be a good friend…right?

OoooOoooO

When Puck showed up to Glee rehearsal that afternoon he was sporting a new split lip. It was no big deal; he gave Greg a lot worse than a busted lip. The only reason Greg was even able to get a hit in was because the coach broke them up and after Puck stepped away Greg swung at his face.

As Puck took a seat he heard everyone in the room gasp and he knew they were all looking at him. The attention only made him smirk. Yes, he was an attention whore and damn proud.

“What happened to your lip?” Puck turned to see Mercedes and Kurt who were staring at him with wide eyes. It was Mercedes who had asked the question but Puck kept his eyes on Kurt. He didn’t look away, didn’t want to. He didn’t want to speak either but luckily Finn spoke for him.

“He got in a fight after football practice.”

At that Mercedes turned to Kurt and mumbled ‘boys and their games I swear’ to which Kurt could only nod. Like Puck, Kurt didn’t look away either. Not until Puck finally spoke.

“I found out someone had prank called a friend of mine and said something pretty harsh so I beat the dude’s ass.”

Puck smiled - not smirked but smiled - when Kurt’s cheeks began to darken with color. The fact that he was the one to make Kurt blush only made Puck’s smile grow. Puck thought about the blushing all during practice. He was the one who made Kurt blush. Him. Noah Puckerman. And the fact that it made Puck happy was so not gay at all. Another dude could be happy about making another blush and not be gay. It also wasn’t gay that Puck’s eyes kept moving to stare at Kurt as he sang and danced. The kid could move, pretty sensually actually, and it’s totally not gay to…appreciate this knowledge.

Puck had been so preoccupied with staring at Kurt that he didn’t even realize that rehearsal was over. He watched as Kurt lagged behind everyone else getting his things organized and putting his scarf on just the right way. Puck knew what he was doing. Kurt was hoping that Puck would stay behind so he could talk to him. Puck figured he’d do just that and sat down on the piano bench. Once they were the only people in the room he heard Kurt take a deep breath, getting ready to speak. Puck let his fingers trail across the piano, letting the random notes come and go as they pleased. This rendered Kurt speechless.

Somehow the random notes turned into ‘Defying Gravity’ and Puck couldn’t help it, he smiled.

“I didn’t know you could play the piano.” Kurt said as he slowly sat down on the bench next to Puck.

Puck kept playing but he made sure to scoff appropriately.

“That’s right Hummel, I’m deep. Feel free to drink it in.”

He was pleasantly surprised to hear Kurt chuckle softly.

“So, what you did…it was pretty much the nicest thing anyone’s ever done for me.” Kurt said softly as he laid his hands in his lap and twiddled his thumbs nervously.

“Yeah, well…don’t get any ideas Hummel.”

Again, Kurt chuckled.

“Puckerman, we’re having a moment here…please don’t ruin it.”

For some reason this brought a smile to Puck’s face. He was having a moment with Kurt Hummel and, for once, he could admit to himself that it was pretty gay…and it didn’t exactly freak him out so much. Maybe, just maybe, Puck could work with this whole ‘gay’ thing.

“So…sing?” Sure, it was pretty cheesy and kind of a chick move but Puck didn’t care. He wanted to hear Kurt sing.

And that’s what he got.

Puck’s fingers gracefully swept along the keys as Kurt defied gravity and it was pretty much the most gayest thing ever but Puck never wanted it to end.

Alright, there’s my first ever Glee fic. I hope it wasn’t too horrible. I think Puck was OOC but I’ll let you guys decide. I hope you guys enjoyed it!
