I would second Ravelry. It's a great source of patterns and has a social networking side that allows you to see other people's comments on the patterns and their versions of it. The forums also a good place to get him with techniques.

http://ian-albert.com/games/ has maps of a lot of video game levels, which can be converted to a knitting or crochet chart using KnitPro at http://www.microrevolt.org/knitPro/ and from there you could make a scarf.

If you're on Ravelry, there are tons of patterns available. If you're not on Ravelry, I'm going to have to insist that you join immediately. It's awesome.

Also, keep in mind that you can make crochet/knit square "pixels" and assemble them into basically any design.
