3DS "holster"

Jan 08, 2013 17:56

Hi folks! I finished this today and I'm so happy with it that I need to share it. :D

I carry my 3DS around with me everywhere by tossing it in my back pocket, but it's getting really scratched up on the corners and I decided I needed something better to keep it safe. I designed the pattern over my winter break and carved out the leather, but I left a lot of my supplies at school and couldn't finish it until now.

It's made of 4oz veg-tanned cow hide. Veg-tanned leather is used for tooling projects, so I was able to put the Triforce on it. :) I used some leather dye to give it a richer brown color and also to paint the sections of the Triforce their respective colors. I'm not 100% sold on having them painted like that but now that it's done, it's done. It's secured with a snap closure.

[EDIT] I was on holiday this weekend and forgot my camera. Here are some more pictures.

The second picture is just the back so you can see what it looks like. The belt just slips through the vertical slits, which is why there's a slight out-bend to the leather between them. The third picture is my "test piece." I have several different shading tools, but nothing looks good to me, so I didn't use any of them. I was also playing with the laurel leaves, but didn't like the contrast between the stamp and the carving. The dark swatch is a brown dye I thought about using and decided against. If you guys have any thoughts on the third one especially, please tell me! :D

This is more or less a prototype product and I'd like to play with it to make it even better, so if you have any comments or critiques, I'd love to hear them!
