Minecraft Creeper Hat.
Hello! I recently finished knitting a Creeper hat for my husband, who is obsessed with Minecraft. It's the second hat I have ever made and I am quite proud of it.
I wanted to share it, so I have put the pattern and more pictures under the cut.
First off, I have never written a pattern before, and I kind of just made this up on the fly, so bear with me. I am writing this assuming you already know how to knit and bind and all that fun stuff.
Creeper Hat.
Materials:
Needles: I used US Size 6 circulars, 16” and US Size 6 Double Pointed Needles (for the decreases)
Yarn: Ok, I didn’t really measure, (since it was kind of on the fly) But I used about 150 yds (it was half a skein) of WORSTED weight Yarn. I used the Red Heart Super Saver Yarn. It acrylic, which makes it not as soft as other yarn, but it’s pretty cheap and comfortable enough. The colours were Spring Green and Black.
GAUGE: 9 sts= 1 inch.
The size on the hat is med/large. If I lay it flat, it’s about 9.5 inches across. It should fit most heads (It’s a tad loose on me, but not uncomfortably so, and fits great on my husband’s head) If you need it for a very small head, lemme know and I’ll see if I can adapt the pattern.

Cast on 88 sts in Green
Join for circular knitting, making sure the stitches aren’t twisted.
Rows 1-8: Ribbing, K1,P1 repeat all the way around.
Rows 9-13: Stockinette (meaning knit all rows in circular knitting)
This is where you start the creeper face. I think what I did is called Fair Isle. Pretty much what I did was when I got to the black stitches in the row, I just started knitting with that colour (there was a loose end) and I knit with black, if I had to switch to green for a bit (like in between the eyes) I just carried the black alongside the back. When I was done with the black for that row, I cut the yarn, leaving about a 6” tail. Then when the project was done I weaved in all the lose tails. The finished result looks good, however, it left a LOT of tails to weave in...which took me a while.
You could either just carry the black behind all the way through the hat, however, that has the potential of causing problems and making the hat not as stretchy. Or you could just duplicate stitch the fave, but that makes the fabric really thick. Depends on what you feel best doing.
Anyway, Creeper face. I work a lot better with text based stuff, however, here is a picture of just the face pattern, if you ever want to put it on something else or something: here
The face is started on row 14, and will cover 30 rows.
Rows 14-18: knit 14 sts in green, knit 4 in black, knit 8 in green, knit 4 in black, and the rest, 58 in green.
Rows 19-28: Knit 14 sts in green, 16 in black, 58 in green.
Rows 29-33: Knit 18 in green, 8 in black, 62 in green.
Rows 34-43: Knit 10 in green, 8 in black, 8 in green, 8 in black, 54 in green.
Row 44: Knit stockinette in green (you will use green the rest of the hat)
At this point the hat should be about 6” tall. If it’s not, knit until it is. Or if you want a taller hat, knit to desired length. (Decreasing is going to add 2” to the top of the hat though, so remember that)
This is where you will start the decreasing as follows:
K9, K2tog, repeat across row (You should be down to 80 sts now)
Knit a plain row. Regular stockinette.
K8, K2tog, repeat across row (72 sts now)
Knit plain row.
K7, K2tog, repeat across row (64 sts now)
Knit plain row.
K6, K2tog, repeat across row (56 sts now)
Knit plain row. (this is where I usually switch to DPNs. Whenever you do it, I suggest doing it on a plain round, because trying to count stitches and such while switching needles is just ugh)
K5, K2tog, repeat across row (48 sts now)
Knit plain row.
K4, K2tog, repeat across row (40 sts now)
Knit plain row.
K3, K2tog, repeat across row (32 sts now)
Knit plain row.
K2, K2tog, repeat across row (24 sts now)
K1, K2tog, repeat across row (16 sts now)
K2tog, repeat across row (8 sts now)
Cut off yarn, leaving about 12” in tail, using a needle, weave the tail through the loops of the 8 sts and tighten it all together to close the hat.
Weave in all the colour changes and such and TAH DAH!! You have a hat!!
It will look like this:
with the edges pretty rough and icky looking (if you did the colours the way I did) but that will all be fixed once you weave everything in, so fear not!
It's quite a comfy hat... I am working on making one for myself (not the creeper though.... I don't play minecraft) I do like wearing it though
Hopefully that pattern wasn't too hard to follow. Like I said I never wrote one before. Still kind of a knitting n00b here.
Hope you enjoy! I would love to get any comments or suggestions (especially on colour work, cause I want to do more, but I don't know if there is an easier/better way to do it) I am still a beginner and I really want to get better.
I have another pattern I made for a Slytherin hat, however, I want to tweak it a bit before I post it. Plus I have like a million ideas for other hats... I kinda really love making them lol.
