I have a 30gig ipod video that I recieved as a surprise gift. I've always thought about buying a mp3 player but could never decide what was right for me. I have a Rio300 or 600 from back in the day before ipod and I decided that I would just wait until there was a choice that I felt was best.

I didn't want an ipod because its hard drive based not flash based so its no good in cold temperatures. Not to mention if you drop it...then that's it. The battery life also sucks but if you turn the back light off you can get about 5-6 hours of life instead of 2-3. My RIO would get 11 hours of battery life off one AA battery.

I was also put off by the price, especially when comparing flash based mp3 players with the ipod. For about $300 you can get a flash-based mp3 player with about 8-10gigs of memory or an ipod with 30gig. It just doesn't compare storage-wise. So I was torn as to what to buy. Also a lot of non-ipod players have am/fm tuners available so you can listen to the radio. And other options.

As I got my ipod as a gift I never really had a choice. The screen also scratches really really easily and *all* the accessories that are for ipods cost $20-30 or more. They really get you on the accessories. Fm transmittors for the ipod are also lousy (lots of static). I ended up buying a tape transmittor thingie ($20). Which works fine but isn't cordless.

The only good case I've found for the ipod that protects the screen well is the iskin, which cost $30.

I've only ever used my own mp3s as I refuse to pay for much ^^.

You really need to do your homework on this.

I would recommend a flash based player, which would leave you with the nano or creative or some other brand. They take abuse much better.

Also there is no way to get your mp3s off the ipod with any Apple released program. You can dl Senuti (itunes backwards) which can do this for you incase of a hard drive failure on your pc. Also I believe itunes music downloading is itunes/ipod specific and cannot be played on other players (though I am sure there is a third party program to take care of it).

Umm I think that is all I have to add...if I missed anything I will add it ^^;
