A sitcom written for the geeks, by the geeks (aka an update on my progress as a writer)

For those that do not know, I am venturing from the safe grounds of comic book writing to the new fields of writing for television and film, and I am buying the equipment and gathering the team to make my own indipendent productions. It ROCKS! I must say that as much as I love writing comics, I find it to be quite tiresom at times, since you have to work with your artist and your editor and your publisher, etc, unless you are going down the indy route of course, to make the comic viable, and if you do not have the right artist for your script, the whole thing can fall flat on its face (thankfully this has never happened to me, of course, I have had the pleasure of working with talented, dedicated people). When writing films and television, however, as much as there are factors to consider such as the budget, it is really all far more relaxed. And when one is writing a situation comedy based around a bunch of geeks? Well, one just feels right at home!

I shall of course be sharing some of the script for the first episode of my sitcom shortly, but for now you can be assured that I have a team of geeks working with me to include all aspects of geekdom - computers, games, films, comics, the internet, etc - because even though I am a huge geek, as you all know by now I am sure (the name of my journal might have been the giveaway :-p), and I shall be the head writer, I really want to make sure that I am not just writing for myself, but for all the geeks out there. In the first few minutes of script I have managed to fit in an episode name referencing Star Wars, a very, very obscure, barely noticeable Firefly reference, a geeky ringtone, a badly sung intro and a WoW (World Of Warcraft) joke. I even have a person named after a lesser known Marvel Comics character, and several of the people have ongoing jokes and catch phrases. I mentioned a few of these bits in my prior LiveJournal Entry entitled 'Even the geeks will find me embarrassing now', but I wanted to bring the point home and expand upon already established points for this entry centering around the subject.

I am so looking forward to sharing some of the script with you all and reading your opinions, and even more so to filming it with my awesome new hardware and talented team of film makers.

I shall be keeping you all as up to date as I can, but for now I thought that I would give you an update about how I am on a creative level, with a little teaser about the series, because at the moment it is all being kept rather hush-hush.

For fans of my comic book writing, do not worry, I am still working on getting my first OGN (Original Graphic Novel) published by the end of 2009, as this is my ultimate goal for the year, and I am working on several short stories as well, I am just simply slowing things down on the comic front for a while to concentrate on having a little more fun. Life is far too short to not live it, and to be honest there are far too many occassions where I did not sleep or leave the house for so long because I was too busy trying to write comics, and I think that that hurt me as a writer, because if you do not enjoy writing it, then your readers will not enjoy reading it. My social and family life also suffered a big blow, and I refuse to let that happen again. My writing is important to me, but I have sorted out my priorities now. I am getting a lot of my friends involved in the sitcom, for instance, so it lets me write, but it also means I can still have fun with my friends.

You are all wonderful people who have been so supportive of all my work up until now, and I hope that you will still stick by my side, even if my decision means that you will have to wait a while to see any more of my writing.

Keep watching this space, though, because I have some more great stuff planned (some of which has been a long, long time coming but I had naught the funding until now) that I cannot wait to tell you all about, and of course I want to update this journal as much as possible with my film reviews and what-not.

So, take it easy and keep it real, because this kitty has dug her creative claws into so much this year that 2009 shall be a hard year to beat when 2010 rolls around!

Ps. I must also apologise for my absense from various conventions, but things have been so hectic on a creative level, and my family life has been in chaos, so I have had to cancel a lot of prior arrangements to attend, sadly. I hope to be back in the game, as it were, shortly, so I can see all of my friends again having a good time, and in costume of course. I am also planning my Party, which is back again this year and will be bigger and better than ever, with loads of geeky tracks playing and a great theme, which many of you will be invited to, so I shant be disappearing off of the map again, fear not!
