I was doing vast amounts of research on Fan Films today, for a *cough* project that I am working on, and, since I want variety, and things that of quality that people will want to watch, I researched (after Star Wars) Star Trek fan films.
The first to appear on the list was the "much anticipated" Star Trek: New Voyages, the new series that has been hailed as the new thing for every Star Trek fan worldwide must see. It is based around the original series characters, and actually features some cameos from those actors. It can be found
here.
Considering the hype, however, I found that, since they were trying to keep to the spirit of the original series, the acting and plot left much to be desired, and the special effects were, as Ian put it, "either too good, or too bad - very indecisive". It simply wouldn't do. I only watched the Pilot, though, so who knows... It might have improved. There are two other episodes available to download, so I will watch those, also, and write back and let you know what I thought.
Anyway, the next thing that I found was another series that aimed to capture the heart and soul of the original series, but was based around the characters of the USS Exeter, the Enterprise's sister ship, after its repairs were completed. For a fan filmed series that has a much lower budget, I found the sets and special effects to be far superior to New Voyages, because they really did look as though they had jumped from the original series into the modern day. The script was also superb, with all the techno babble and "classic lines" (Ian's favourite being the compulsory "there has got to be a way out of here!" once the character/s have been brigged. The action scenes were also well choreographed. It was, in both mine and Ian's opinion, far superior for a hardcore Trek fan than New Voyages. It can be found
here.
I should watch more of both to draw a more conclusive opinion, however.
All the same, Star Trek fans should give them both a try. Both well done.
