You can always tell it's going to be a good day when... you learn the future
I've been thinking a lot recently about language, and specificly, non-spoken language. The idea of how we as a species communicate through signs, signals and the like.
For example. the obvious intention here is that this meter is broken. But there are none of the usual signs of this, like
this, which is based on words and spoken language. This symbol isn't bounded by borders or translation, but is simply a international sign. There are loads out there like
this or
this. But the thing that marks out these examples is that they are citizen created. No company, goverment or charity has had these made and forced on us. They evolved organicly within our culture, so much so that they exist in many real world forms, not bound by usual limitation of
signs, that changing it changes the meaning. Taking the horns as an example we have:
this,
this,
this and even
this. All these are understood to be the same meaning, despite the context, medium or material.
Where do these come from? The obvious answer is media. The invasive and pervasive nature of american movie, music and culture have infected all but the most remote areas. But surely can't tell the entire story. There are thousands of signs exisiting in every culture, why are only some taken up? I have no answers, suffice to look at culture as virus, with the local immune system fighting back against the intruders. Im well aware the roughness of this analogy, but also discovering its relevence. Who is to say the evolution of the species from here on out is going to be a physical one? why could it not be one of thinking. of outlook, of lifestyle? Everyday we sudvert the supposed ideals of evolution. We don't live to have kids. We all find something in our lives, be it religion, our partners, a cause, and dedicate our lives to it. Where does this leave Darwin? If we are the only species on earth to do this, are we still just another beast, or are we actually something more? Answers on a postcard on the usual address true believers...
