You can always tell it's going to be a good day when... you are within reach of that elusive goal....
What a wknd we have had! The
end of the world is nigh and all that! This is what happens when you go building on flood plains, what did people expect? Work was flooded which then knocked out our power, so we are currently running off a big ass generator truck out the back, which is a kinda surreal apocalype-is-coming image... But enough of the weather, lets get back to the geeky stuff...
First off, no geek-a-thon would be complete with a mention of
The Deathly Hallows, but for that sake of those that haven't read it yet, i'll post this bit in white. Just select the text if you wanna read it: I'm gonna set my stall right on this one, i liked it. I liked it a lot. This was a fitting tribute to the end of the series, the way in referenced all the other books (geting the basilisk fang, the first stitch etc) and the ends it presented for the characters. All out magical war is the way more books should end....As to the oft specualted and rumoured deaths...i thought most of them were played brilliantly, Dobby's the most. The only ones that i felt that let it down were the deaths of Remus and Tonks. For such high-profile characters, their deaths seemed almost footnotes in the story...but read it, its very good...
Welcome back non-believers, onto less spolier driven fare... Post-potter and with an inforced house arrest courtesy of the weather, I took the chance to catch up on some films and stuff i've missed recently. First up was
Severence. Once again,
Danny Dyer is playing himself in a film. I know he is likeable in this role but for once I hope he would he would do something else...anyway i digress... This film lies well within the broad genre of british horror comedy, but fails to reach the highs achieved by
Shaun or
Soilders. The cast is likeable but forgettable, the plot is either too convoluted or just far too
simple and the bad guy is faceless to the extreme...but it a fun and enjoyable two hours and is saved by an inspired last line...
No 2 in the list was
HellBoy: Sword of Storms. I am a big fan of the orignal
film, i think it is a well under-appreciated film, much better than that
Superman crap... and this definatly follows in that films footsteps. It tells the story of Hellboys adventures in ancient japan with spirit of a samurai living with in him, fighting the living imbodiments of Thunder and Lighting....yeah, i know... To cut a long story short, i'm not a fan of japanese animation and their style of storytelling (pokemon has been the death knoll for kids tv) and so this film never sat that well with me, but pick it up if you are into Hellboy in anyway...
Third and film in my day of media is the low-budget film
Right At Your Door. It 'stars'
Rory Cochrane, more famous for his roles in
Empire and
Dazed, and
Mary McCormack, well known as Kate Harper from
The West Wing. To say this film is an emotional rollercoaster is a understatement, and although the ending might leave you a little disappointted, it is well worth a watch for anyone looking for something different from the usual hollywood propaganda...
