You can always tell it's going to be a good day when... you pass the test, twice!
One film have been meaning to talk about since last week is Brokeback Mountain. What a god-awful piece of film-making that was. There appears to be a collective sense gap in our society when it comes to 'issue' films and telly. Don't get me wrong, I'm pro-censorship in anyway, that isn't what this is about. This is about technical quality. This film was dull, unengaging and shockingly written. I don't care about any issue in a film or TV show if it can't engage me in the story, writing 101. There was nothing in the film to drawn me in, to get me to care about the characters or the story. Queer As Folk was the same. I do understand the importance of this show, the idea of the gay Sex and The City, but the acting was abysmal, the writing floundered between plodding and laughable and the camera dizzing at best. In this country (america more so) we have many manyy people who are techinally excellent at handling film equipment, there are many amzing actors and talented writers, so why do none of these come together on such films? A bid ol' thumbs down.
But a big thumbs up for District 13. The french-made parkour/action film was outstanding. Finally the western world have worked out how to make action films with the excitement and life that the far east have been churning out for years. The story is predicitable, but what action isn't? To take a look at Mission Impossible 3 next to this, Mr Cruise should go back to Oz (thats a dwarf joke, not an australian joke for all those who care...). More like this and europe might finally move out of the kitchen sink and arty-crap rut we have been in for years...
Work continues onwards, am currently re-working some of my old films, regrading them to a bit better quality with my new toys...ill post up some screen grabs when I can.
