Simplification
I unfairly get credit from people who know me for courage that I don't have. Courage is laudable, but courage describes action in the face of fear.
I think a lot of people see how I act very differently than I do because I sometimes do things they would be afraid to do, because they would fear how others might perceive them. So they see me as brave.
In this, I am not. It's not that I don't care what others think of me; rather I care far more what I think of me.
