Ahah, first I'm sorry I didn't get this out yesterday, but I knew
myrrhlynn would be posting some great stuff, annnddd I was a little out of it too.
SO! Ta-da! The unveiling of the new Wednesday posts which will be posted alternate with interviews issss: CAREER DAY! Starting today. (Yes yes, forget today is Thursday. We're pretending it's Wednesday) I'll be taking time to post two to three job postings I've "found." Now I am aware that lost of our readers aren't from America, and a great deal of you aren't even looking for a job, but as I search for my own job if I've learned anything it's that Entertainment Industry places are CRAZY, and you can learn a lot from job postings, so hopefully everyone will enjoy these posts reguardless!
So for today I'm highlighting a video game industry position, and internship positions.
Today's video game position is:
Game Master with Aeria Games.
A Game Master, or GM, is THE entrance job for companies who host/create MMORPGs. You will play as a badly named, almighty character. Using that character you will moniter and interact with customers of your MMORPG. Additionally, it will be up to you to test, document, and investigate reported bugs. You'll also be organizing and running events for players, and you must maintain customer relations.
A GM position is an a good entry level position because it doesn't require a college degree. To be a GM all you need is knowledge of MMORPGs, basic computer abilities, and the ability to speak/write in English. Lots of people start with a GM job and then work their way up the ladder. (Basic Business Hint: Many companies will fill a position internally and promote someone they already have on staff rather than hire someone new to the company.)
I know a lot of people picture a GM position as being all fun and no games, but when you're playing as a GM you represent your company. This means you will have to act perfect. No favorites, most likely no friends, for sure no guild, and your name will probably be something like GM_32. Another fact to keep in mind is the shift you get. Aeria needs GMs on staff at all hours of the day, not just during the normal work day, so you might be asked to take a shift that starts at midnight.
Now I'm not trying to disuade you from this job, it's just best to be realistic. You will not be paid to play, you will be paid to work.
Note: Interested but you live outside of America? Aeria Games is international! Go to their
homepage and see if they have an office in your country!
Our second position of the day:
Viz Media Interns in San Francisco, CA.
Sadly, if you're interested in working for an anime or manga company, I'm mostly going to be posting intern positions here. Why? Because intern positions are the unpaid versions of an MMORPG GM position. (As I mentioned before, lots of companies will fill a position internally, plus if you want to stand out to an American anime company, like Bandai Entertainment, they will be a lot more impressed with you if you had an internship with Viz Media or Tokyo Pop than if you worked at Muffin's Pet Shop.)
Moving on! Viz Media has intern positions fooorr: Animation Production, the Creative Department, the Editorial department, Viz Media magazines (Shoujo beat and Shounen jump!) and consumer marketing.
The sad part about these positions is that they are unpaid and you MUST recieve college credit to complete them. But that's easy enough to get, even if you have to go back to school for a 'summer' to complete it. Additionally, if you don't live in San Fran it's going to be a lot harder to get the job. You'll have to assure them you'll move to the area for the duration of the internship.
The good part about these jobs is that usually they aren't very picky about who they'll take on. They have pretty general requests, like the ability to work with Mac computers, or excellent English skills.
If you want an internship position and you don't live in the area, BE SURE TO SAY THAT IN YOUR COVER LETTER!!
