I alw
ays wanted to play this game. (ALWAYS) That's why I was so totally psyched when Capcom announced it would be releasing a version for the Wii! I was downright gleeful when I found it in a used video game store!
Rating: 4 out of 5
Geekyness Level: None really, although I don't know how a n00b would fair with this game...
Here's the story: You are Amaterasu, the sun goddess, and you've taken on the form of a giant, white wolf. You have a special power, (man this is so much cooler than it sounds.) the celestial brush which allows you, with the wii mote, to literately draw on the screen. The basic plot idea is that you battle a demon with the lazy, drunk warrior, Susano, to save Kamiki Village. After banishing the spirit you track him through a historic Japan, defeating it in the end.
There's lots of in depth details, but I don't want to give too much away. ;)
The sound track is gorgeous and while the art style is quite whimsical and not at all traditional I actually kinda like it. (Although in the beginning I could only play the game for an hour at a time or I would make myself sick to my stomach.) I actually love the way you, as a wolf, can interact with the surrounds. It's quite beautiful. Although be careful when and where you play, I don't know how many times I've killed myself during game-nighttime because of the glare on my TV.
See what I mean? Now try playing that on a small TV in the middle of the day.
The downside? My gosh, it took me like a WEEK to master using the stupid brush with the wii mote. The things that come very, very easy the game will spend 20 minutes trying to tell you what to do. Meanwhile anything in battle that would require the brush to be at all USEFUL they spend about 3 seconds telling you what to do, and then they'll repeat it like a chant over and over and over until, by sheer luck, you manage to get it.
However, once you get used to the celestial wii mote brush the game is much more enjoyable, not to mention easier. And besides the stupid brush, the game controls are pretty nifty.
Soooo prettttty! <3
What I love about Ookami is it's uniqueness. The beautiful art, the idea of drawing (which was practically made for the wii) the fact that you're a wolf, not a human, and the Japanese type mythology really add up to a winning game. Do I absolutely adore it? Does it earn a spot on my favorites shelf with Kingdom Hearts, Zelda, and all my precious Final Fantasy games? No. I do, however, highly recommend it. Ookami is a very fresh and new type of game, and I am very interested in playing the upcoming sequel! <3
