For those of you who don't know, Myrrhlynn and I used play the MMORPG Ragnarok Online. We've played it in two different phases, and the last time we played we actually got decently high characters. But eventually we quit. Why? BECAUSE LEVELING IS SO FREAKIN' BORING!! My gooooooooooooooooooooosh while leveling for the first 97 levels might be fun and interesting, when you get up there and you see your experience bar fill up by .01 percent, even by ,001 percent it's so s.l.o.w. So we invented personal games/challenges to keep Ragnarok interesting!
This post looks into 3 of those ways. Now granted we played Ragnarok, but I'm willing to bet all three "games" we created and played are doable on pretty much every other MMORPG out there. In fact I bet lots of people play them already, especially our first game which is....
Rare Monster Hunting. This game not only is fun because you're beating and killing all the bosses/mini bosses that tormented you as a n00b, but it can also help you get some extra $. Now Rag. has mini bosses that medium leveled players can take on, solo, easily. These mini bosses (the bosses too) respawn every hour. We both had multiple characters, so we would leave one of our characters on the map of the miniboss and, when we played or were home, would teleport around the field every hour to find the mini boss. Eventually you get sick of killing them, but it's a fun way to kill a few minutes. You can always put together a larger team and go after the middle grade, actual bosses as well. As a priestess I teamed up with a high level crusader. Together we could handle most of the mid range bosses out there. The fun part about these things is that mid level bosses and mini bosses aren't very likely to kill you and take away your precious exp. Additionally you might get some nice gear/items out of it, and it is kinda fun too. I always teased my partner crusader that we were like bounty hunters.
The downside of this activity is that you MUST be a student (college unless it's the summer) OR you MUST have odd job hours. Boss hunting is easiest to do when lots of people aren't online. Prime hunting time is in the morning, when most people are gone to work or in school, or late, late, LATE at night. (We're talking like midnight to four in the morning here.
Next up: Screw Kafra Corp!
Kafra Corp is the "company" in Rag that will store your equipment for you, runs the mailing system, and will sell warps to cities in the area. If you are a priestess, or even friends of a priestess, you can kill A LOT of time and make a little $ buy selling cheap warps in crowded areas. If you're a priestess and feel like being angelic, you can also sit in an area where lots of people respawn or in a spot that is crowded with n00bs and heal them and what not.
As a side note, and interesting experiment to try if you have a lot of game and are sick of slow leveling is to get a scantily clad female character. I made a dancer for Rag for the sole sake of having one. I would park her in a heavily populated city and cackle with my friends and guildies as males hit on me. It's pretty much proven that the less clothes your character wears the higher the chance is that you are going to get hit on/randomly talked to.
And the final game, which in my opinion is the most fun: The Bishie Hunt.
MMORPGs are sprinkled with cute, male NCPs, and their images are all yours for the taking! This game MUST be played as a group. The point of the game is to try and find the HOTTEST NPC. Split up, or as you go through the game, keep your eye out for the hot male NPCs and take a screenshot of them. (If possible try to get yourself in the shot too.) It's best if you have a deadline for this game, like the end of the week or the end of the day. When the deadline hits compare the screenshots and vote who has the best bishie.
Kidd or Digolz, which one is better?
There are variations of this game. Friends and I would go to Prontera, the biggest/most populated city in Rag, and look for cute male characters (played by actual gamers) The trick would be to find one who was AFK, or their character was selling something so the character was there but the actual gamer was not. When you have a chance crowd around the unsuspecting character and take a screenshot. (The picture is best if you and friends are 1. saying something together or 2. all doing an emotion/emocon together.) Be quick though! It is REALLY embaressing if the guy comes back and asks you what the heck you're doing.
