morganraven brought up the excellent point of how everyone should have
a few spices around for cooking. Absolutely right! I listed a few of my favorites on the previous post, but I also thought I'd throw in a few words about condiments:
Mayonnaise
Ketchup
Soy sauce
Lime juice
Lemon juice
Worchestershire sauce
Mustard
All of the above can be found in our pantry or fridge no matter what time of year you're talking about. Mayonnaise and mustard are great on sandwiches, of course, but they're also good for making up tuna salad or potato salad or chicken salad, not to mention their function as ingredients in other recipes. The same goes for ketchup: it's great on burgers, but it can be a sauce ingredient. Soy sauce--great for steamed rice, or for Asian marinades. Lime juice and lemon juice are great additions to drinks, but they can also perk up a chicken or fish recipe, not to mention their role in desserts! (Key lime pie, anyone? Lemon meringue?) Worchestershire sauce ... my favorite ingredient to add to spaghetti sauce.
What else do you have in your kitchen year-around?
