Well I rescued another Quaker. I haven't named her yet but she is a doll. She loves everyone and will kiss anyone. She plucks the top of both wings, some of her chest, and her butt. (not including her tail feathers.) I went and picked her up from a home in Jersey Village (NW Houston) on Monday where they had found her on their back porch. I HAD a vet appointment for Thursday (for her and Rio) but this had to be changed to Monday due to Rita. My goals with her right now are to:
1. Try to find her original owners.
2. Give her a clean bill of health.
She is now in New Braunfels with me, where I have come to run from Hurricane Rita. I live less than 100 feet from Galveston Bay in La Porte, TX. Right now I am praying I will have a home when I return on Monday. I took all five of my birds with me of course. (They hardly fit in my car) Max(Indian Ringneck) was put into Ms. Petey's cage, and Ms. Petey & Hunny (Budgies) were paired together in one cage (well they are lesbians.) Rio stayed in his cage, because his psychological well being can't deal with a cage change and a 5 hour road trip in one day. Doll (Quaker, don't know what else to call her, but this is NOT going to be her name.) rode in a carry cage because her cage wouldn't fit in the car with everyone else. I went an got her a new cage as soon as I got here.
I had to kind of break her Q because of the hurricane. I tried my best to prevent even air space from being broken but there was really NO WAY I could stop it in the car unless I put her in the trunk and this was NOT going to happen. This is/was an emergency situation. Now that I am at my final destination is their anything I can do to prevent exposure? (Besides keeping them in separate rooms)
Please keep me, my birds, and all those other bird owners enduring this hurricane in your thoughts and prayers.

I also have a story to tell about Rio's last vet appointment:
Rio is a Quaker I rescued in March. I also got him the same way I received Doll. Someone found him in their yard. The original owners were never found. He plucks all the down off of this whole body (just leaving the bigger feathers), and plucks all the feathers off his neck, legs, and under his wings. He also chews the skin under his wing. My vet and I have been working on his chewing problem since I got him, he stops, and then will start up again.
The method of treatment we had decided on the last time I went to see her (Last friday) was an e-collar, the bead looking kind that just goes around the neck. Well as soon as we got it on him he instantly attaches his beak and starts trying to chew it off while THRASHING around everywhere (he couldn't/wouldn't even stand up straight. He would fall back and then fall forward with his wing wide open.) By the time we were going to remove it, he has already chewed straight through the foamy plastic! Well it seems this method is not going to work, so now we are going to antibiotic, with pain medication, and topical antibiotic route. (Last time we just did antibiotics, and topical, plus diet has been an on-going process) I will be sure to keep you updated, with pictures too.
P.S. I will even take pictures of the process his mutilation wound healing.
*tomorrow when he wakes up I will take a picture before I doctor it*
