So on Thursday night I came home from work to realize the tip of Hunny's toe is hanging from the rest of her foot/toe. I know exactly what happened and I can't stop crying. I'm sure it went like this; Hunny is the friendliest thing I own, she wants to be part of everything, including the cable man's head at times. So she likes to go and talk to Rio at times during the day. (Even though he hates her.) I'm sure she landed on the side of his cage, her toe exposed to his hating her sharp beak, and he ran over to her and bit it off, or should I say almost bit it off. It was hanging and blood was all over the ceiling perch and even a little on the window. In the places she perched after it happened. I'm so lucky she didn't lose enough blood to go into shock and die. I am also lucky she didn't go into shock period. I would have cried harder I am sure if I would have heard her scream when he did bite it off.
I know its not Rio's fault, and I am the only one to blame because I let her and Ms. Petey free fly, if they would have been locked in their cages this would have never happened, I know this. I also know I might be the owner of two of the happiest domestic Budgies, because they are so free. I still won't lock them up in their cages during the day, because Rio is the only danger to them. That danger is/has been taken care of. I am going to apply pexi-glass with small holes drilled through it to his cage, so my little girls can't land on it and get their little toes eaten off.
So the second I saw what had happened, and knew immediately what happened I called my vets emergency number to see if I could make an emergency appointment right that second, for right that second. I couldn't and they gave me the number for a 24 hour emergency vet clinic that would treat birds. It is about 30 miles away but I don't care, I race to get my baby in her travel cage and fly out the door. By this time her toe has stopped bleeding for some time. It began to bleed again because she was climbing all over her travel cage. I get to the vet and their exotics doctor is a call-in doctor who lives far. LOOK I DON'T GIVE A #$#%! MY BABY'S TOE IS HANGING OFF!!! So they call her and she appears. Hunny is now on Trimeth, and Metacan (for pain) her toe is bandaged (which she has already removed, so I re-bandaged it, and it is already removed again!) She got fluids, and weights 34 grams. She slept all day yesterday, which I am not sure if this was because we didn't get home from the ER until 3 am or because of the pain/immune response. She is herself again today, playing and singing. She is still sleeping a little more than usual but this could be caused by her meds.
I am also going to do everything I can to keep Rio, if I really can't without endangering the rest of my birds, he will be placed with
