TV commentary:
X-Files- You know, I realize the old series mixed mythos eps with case of the week eps, but when they brought it back, they really should've changed the ratio up. Like people aren't tuning in for the case of the weeks, because that was fine when X-Files was new, but its been more than a decade, there are plenty of better sci fi shows out there now. If they were going to bother bring this show back, it should be for something that matters.
SVU- Seriously, what is with the writers this season? Like the Barba thing was ridiculous. Now this ep with Carisi's niece. I know they want to cause drama, but episodes like this are dangerous. Rapes are already underreported, especially on college campuses. Particularly date rape. We don't need TV eps that reinforce the belief that "Oh, you girls shouldn't be so quick to accuse, you could ruin a boy's life!" What about the victims?! You already got dudes thinking a lot of these accusations are false, why would you have a show that helps them justify their belief.
I mean, I know there's a lot more to last night's ep than that, but its not an idea that needs to continue to be put out there. Also, Stone and Olivia? No thanks!
The Magicians- Musical ep! Not as great as I'd hoped, but not bad. I think they have people on their cast who have singing chops, I just don't think they did a good job of showcasing that. Like Under Pressure was good, but it could've been way better.
So the quest for the key takes Alice, Q, and Kady into some pocket dimension where Josh had been trapped by a demon that well, traps people in a scenario they enjoy and feeds off that emotion. They try to get him out, but Josh is mad because they've kinda ditched him.
Meanwhile, Julia continues to investigate the faeries, despite Fen's deep mistrust of them. Given how they've treated her, she's fine with them suffering. But Julia thinks maybe these faeries are different. So she talks to Skye, who's all faeries don't have magic! And so Irene's family protects them, and in exchange they serve her family in any way they want.
Julia's all, what if I prove to you you can do magic? And so she tries to teach Skye spells, but Fen tells her, the way she's seen faeries do magic is different from the hand gestures magicians use. So Julia changes tactics and manages to get Skye to do magic, only for Skye's necklace to start killing her. Julia chastises herself for being so arrogant and short sighted to not see that trap, and manages to freeze Skye in stasis while she figures out how to stop her from dying.
And in Fillory, Margo and Eliot are sentenced to death, and they convince Tick to pick the sentence that would take the longest time and so he takes them on the Muntjac to the infinite falls, where they'll go over and fall for a long time, being cut up by the razor sharp rocks littering the falls. Anyways, on the trip there, they're all, "cool, now free us!" but Tick totally betrays them, complaining how the children of Earth keep effin up his kingdom, and things were fine until they and the Chatwins showed up.
So he's going to dump them in a lifeboat to go over the falls and die. But luckily for them, the Muntjac wants to stay with Margo and Eliot. And so its Tick and the guards who have to escape on a rowboat if the Muntjac is so determined to die with Eliot and Maego.
Anyways, this all culminates with Alice, Kady, and Q finding the key in the pocket dimension, and are about to leave, when Quentin realizes this has all been a test. A test to not abandon Josh. And at that moment, the eight of them (Q, Alice, Kady, Penny, Margo, Eliot, Julia, and Josh) are telepathically linked. Quentin says they need to help Josh, but the gang is skeptical, since Penny doesn't even remember Josh and he's got the whole being captured by the Library occupying his time/mind at the moment. Same for Julia trying to save Skye and Margo and Eliot about to go off the infinite waterfalls and die.
But he manages to convince them, and the cast goes into a good rendition of Under Pressure. They save Josh, Julia saves Skye, and the Muntjac takes flight, flying Margo and Eliot to safety. So its a win!
Riverdale- Heh, since Berlanti also did the upcoming "Love, Simon" movie, we have a clunky tie in this ep!
So lets start with actual Riverdale. Cheryl is kinda pissed at the core four of not letting her go on their little weekend getaway, claiming "couples only!" So she totally calls Jug once they're up there to tell him Betty and Archie kissed!
Toni overhears this, and instead of getting mad, she tells Cheryl she can tell she's hurting and is just lashing out. Eventually, they end up both going to the theater to see "Love, Simon" and sitting together, and Toni notices how she was affected by the movie. Which leads to Cheryl coming out, confessing she loved someone once, but her mother ruined it. Nope, not her brother, her best friend in junior high, Heather, whom Penelope caught sleeping in Cheryl's bed during a sleepover. Penelope called Cheryl a deviant and disallowed Heather from coming over again. Toni assures her she's not deviant, she's awesome.
Meanwhile, Kevin is hurt because not only has Moose fully committed to Midge, Moose is all, "Midge totally knows we used to date!" but Kevin learns later Moose lied and wants Kevin to not let Midge know. Josie piles on this by revealing their parents are dating. She found out her mom is planning to divorce her dad and so she did something rash.
Which, it weirds me out her parents are still married. We saw him once, and even then I totally thought her parents WERE divorced! Like why is he always gone then? But yeah, apparently the Sheriff is also still married, his wife serving overseas, which, that's kinda low.
Anyways, Josie figures it wasn't right to just drop that in Kevin's lap, and so she and Kevin talk, and then they talk to their parents. They all need to have this conversation about whatever this is going on between Sierra and Tom, so now's a good time as any to start, and they're willing to listen.
On to the core four, apparently the rest of the gang still haven't met Chic? Well, Jughead has now, and Chic is his usual creepy self. On the trip, Jug suggests resolving the tension by having V kiss him. That way, Jug in the future can't be all "Oh yeah, you kissed Betty" in order to win arguments. This will even things out.
It doesn't really solve things, and the tension is heightened when V finds out Hiram "suggested" this trip for V and her friends to get her out of town while he meets with his business associates. She gets pretty pissed when she finds out Archie totally knew this. Well, that and he's been secretly meeting with Andre, her new driver, whom she had told not to come back until 7pm Sunday when its time to leave. But he'd been hiding nearby on guard.
So she goes into town with Betty and they unfortunately catch the eye of some local townies who hate these richies vacationing in their town. But yeah, more on that later. Jug finds out that Hiram bought the trailer park and paid off everyone's rent so they don't have to move. Jug thinks its a bribe, but Archie and V are all, "No, you shamed him with your article, so he's just making restitution!"
But then Betty gets a call from her mom saying Hiram bought the paper from Hal. So now she also thinks V's dad is trying to stop any reporting on his shadiness. Which, Jug being all, "Its the only paper in town" makes his narration at the beginning of the ep ridiculous. He was talking about how Betty was all freaked out and checking the paper religiously, worried there'd be something on the murder. You mean, the murder your mom committed, in the paper she writes?! Its like, dude, if your mom is the only paper in town, why would there be anything on her crime?!
Anyways, the argument is interrupted by the townies committing home invasion. V manages to trip the silent alarm and chases the townies off, but not before they take her purse and necklace. Only, Archie, still upset over the Black Hood, chases the guy down. He corners him in the woods, only to bump into Andre, who's all, "Go home, I'll take care of this!" and Archie does, and hears a gunshot.
Which, did Andre execute that guy? In any case, the friends all make up, with them thinking Archie just never caught up with the guy. He later has a chat with Hiram, who says he did the right thing letting Andre take care of it. Archie confesses feeling bad about not killing the Black Hood himself, and Hiram is all, "Yes, when it comes to loved ones, never hesitate!"
So wait, is Archie going all dark?
