TV commentary:
Dexter- Aw, I thought this was a sweet episode, until the end, and then I haz a sad. Actually, I'm kinda freaking out about the rest of the season, because I wanna say its prolly only gonna get worse for Dex from here. He's not the kinda character to get a happy ending.
But yeah, he finds blood under Cassie's fingernails, and its Zack's. So he's resolved to bring Zack to justice, and takes Hannah along for the ride. Turns out, he didn't kill Cassie! I knew it! But more on that later. He was actually busy hunting an ex college bud who had murdered a girl on spring break. And while Dex was remarking about Zack being a quick study, there's a lot of stuff he got wrong. So Dexter and Zack have this kinda father-son moment where Dexter is schooling him on how to do serial killing right. Its kinda funny when Zack does things like chastise himself for not using gloves. But yeah, they leave Hannah alone in the hotel so Zack and Dex can get rid of the guy he actually killed. In the process, Dexter thinks he knows how Zack's blood got under Cassie's nails- someone had put a razor in his car door handle, cutting his finger badly and he bled all over the place, so it would be easy for someone to have gotten his blood.
Meanwhile, Deb told her boss she knows where Hannah is (leaving out the fact how she knows it or that she's with Dex), since she's worth a cool 250, to get help tracking Hannah down. She ends up using the gps tracker she slipped onto Dex's car to track Dex down to Zack's hotel room where Hannah's waiting alone. Hannah says she's in love with Dexter, and apparently that's enough to get Deb off her back. She even tells her boss Hannah prolly left the country already and not to bother. Also, she tenders her resignation, because the PI stuff isn't for her, she wants to be a cop again. Her boss acts disdainfully towards her, since as he's said before he quit the cop business because the pay is shit. Also, unbeknownst to Deb, he's still going after Hannah, b/c that's $250,000.
But yeah, Dexter and Zack had returned during the tense standoff between Deb and Hannah, before Deb left in a huff, and Zack congratulates him on having two women fighting over him. Which is amusing, because Dexter doesn't correct Zack by saying Deb is his sister since Deb actually is jealous in that way.
Anyways, Dex and Hannah and Zack drive back, and its like a family road trip, and then he goes to see Dr Vogel, who insists they stay for dinner, and its like one big happy serial killing family. But then dammit, someone kills Zack in a brain surgeon way and leaves his corpse in Dex's apartment. Dex is actually pretty upset- hell, he seemed more upset about this than when Rita died. Like when Rita died, he was just out of it. Here, you can see the sadness on his face. He had just started to think of Zack as his son, and he's suddenly been ripped away.
So I guess the brain surgeon isn't dead. Honestly, like I said, I do not trust the bf at all. He's had to many scenes for him to be just a nobody. They also had Dexter and Masuka randomly hear what the guy does when Quinn was questioning him, which ostensibly was so the audience would know the guy's alibi. But why be so specific to what he does, unless it ends up being a clue later. And then when Quinn asks him about Zack, he says Zack "kinda looks familiar", which we know he saw Zack, and maybe he really didn't get a good look, but it could be because he didn't want Quinn sniffing around because he is the Brain Surgeon. I mean, the Brain Surgeon had begun spying on Dexter, he could have easily found he was interested in Cassie and started dating her to eff with him.
Plus, he tells Quinn, "I know we only knew each other a few days, but we were wanting to spend our lives together!" Which always is a huge red flag in crime procedurals- that's how they figured out who the Reaper was on Criminal Minds- some bf of a girl who hasn't know her that long but is telling the cops afterward they had plans to be together forever. It also doesn't gel with Cassie's version of the relationship- remember, it ended up that she thought it was Dexter who wasn't interested, and was pleasantly surprised to learn Dex was still into her. She even said she always goes for the messed up guy, like Dexter with the murdered ex-wife and the serial killer ex-gf and it seemed like she was going to dump boring what's his name.
And with the reveal that the Brain Surgeon is still alive, its either someone we haven't seen, or someone we've already seen. So unless it happens to be one of the long running characters, its either him, Deb's boss, or Masuka's daughter, or Vogel herself. Vogel could be involved, I don't think its Nikki, and I think Deb's boss is evil in a different way, being all creepy with Deb and wot not. Plus, if he were the Brain Surgeon, the Hannah stuff wouldn't really be unknown to him. If the bf is still in the next episode, then he has officially been in too many eps for a minor character and he definitely has to be the Brain Surgeon.
