Carry Me over the Threshold
“So what are you telling me?” Dean says into his cell phone loud enough that Gabriel sits up from his position on the floor in front of the TV and looks at him.
There’s a pause while Dean is listening and then he says, much more softly “Let me talk to Gabriel about it. But we have some time to plan so we should be okay.”
Another pause.
“No seriously, thank you.” Dean whispers. “I miss him too. You have no idea.”
When he hangs up Gabriel debates being the bigger person in their relationship for about thirty seconds before he gives up and asks “What are we going to talk about?”
Dean looks nervous and it’s enough to have Gabriel wishing he hadn’t taken his prosthesis off earlier in the night. He wants to get up and walk over to his lover; thread their fingers together and force Dean to look at him so he can make sure something terrible hasn’t happened. “Dean?” He presses and the other man must hear it in his voice. Dean’s head snaps up and he shakes his head as he walks over and slides down next to Gabriel on the floor.
“That was Lisa,” Dean says like he’s in shock. “Ben wants to come spend the summer with us. She says it’s okay with her if we’re alright with it.”
Gabriel swallows. There’s a lot more too this than what Dean is saying. Lisa and Dean had an ugly divorce that involved Dean’s unresolved feelings for Gabriel who was then his best friend. Gabriel had been clueless at the time. Lisa concluded the proceedings by declaring that Dean wasn’t really Ben’s father even though he had raised the kid as his own. It had been heart breaking and there had been a while there when Gabriel thought Dean might crack under the pressure.
Even now, with so much time passed between them, Dean still feels a strong pull toward Ben. He sends him birthday and Christmas gifts, they talk on the phone at least once every other week. Gabriel isn’t surprised that Ben wants to spend more time with Dean.
Who wouldn’t?
“We need to get a bigger place,” Gabriel murmurs. Dean’s face lights up like Christmas and he’s spinning Gabriel around in a circle before he can say anything more.
Turns out finding a handicapped accessible apartment is impossible. So they decide to buy a house. After all, they’ve been friends for years and living together for almost two. Gabriel feels like it’s time.
Their realtor is the asshole of the century. “You have specifically requested a one level home with two bathrooms and three bedrooms. Do you have any idea how difficult that will be to come by in this area?”
“No,” Gabriel snarks. “I thought that was your job.”
Zachariah gives him a dry glare. “If you would consider two level living it would be much easier. It’s not like either one of you are unlucky enough to be disabled.”
Dean’s smirking even before Gabriel moves. He slams his leg up on top of the table and yanks up his pants to show off his prosthetic leg. “Listen shit head,” Gabriel snaps. “I’m more able than you. But stairs and I don’t get along once I take my leg off at night. Now find us a house and shut your face.”
It only takes two weeks. The house is on the small side but they can afford it and it’s close to their jobs. Closing drags on for another month but they’ll still be settled in before Ben gets there when school lets out. Thank God for Sam and his love of lifting heavy objects. Cas participates by cleaning every square inch of the place until it sparkles and Dean walks up to the front door beside Gabriel on their first night with an evil smile on his face.
“Don’t even think it,” Gabriel warns.
“Think what?” Dean goes for innocent and fails miserably.
“We bought a house,” Gabriel huffs. “We didn’t get married. You are not picking me up and carrying me over the threshold.”
“Yes I am,” Dean’s beaming.
Gabriel goes to glare at him but the joy shining in his lover’s eyes breaks down his walls and makes him forget about his issue with Dean picking him up all the time. “Just this once,” he warms as he opens his arms.
Dean scoops him up into his arms with a contented hum. Gabriel rolls his eyes and glares at their siblings, just daring them to say something.
“Are you happy now?” he hisses to Dean after the other man kicks the door shut behind them.
“More than I have ever been my whole life,” Dean whispers before kissing him on the forehead and easing him back down onto his feet.
