Keeping this entry public. I would greatly appreciate if you linked it about and saw if the concept can generate interest. Like mentioned before, I'm not making another RP without player interest.
Working Title:
Schwarzweiss
Premise:
The multiverse is collapsing. Something or someone out there is enforcing mass destruction of the worlds. One by one, they collapse and vanish, leaving behind only small pockets formed from particularly durable locations. However, these locations are now hostile and infested with monsters, both ones native to the world and completely unfamiliar.
The characters are soon approached by a deity-like figure who asks them to help in solving the mystery behind the collapse. Different characters are offered their own reasons. The good ones are offered to follow the path of truth and justice, while more selfish ones are asked to do it for self-gain and survival. Even villains can help, seeing as there would be nothing left to conquer for them otherwise.
Absolute villains, such as Kefka from FF6 and Sigma from Mega Man, would be unavailable, but entirely because they could be used in plot. They could become available once their plot ends.
As a result, the whole "WHERE AM I?" element is absent. The characters participate in the situation out of necessity or personal ideals.
Setting:
Characters are brought into a hub-like town which is used as their base of operations. The town is your basic expansive RPG fair, there are shops, monuments and so on. In order to provide variety and avoid overpopulation, there are several such towns done in different style. Each one is supervised by a specific deity or powerful NPC that is basically keeping the whole thing together and protecting it from collapse. All of them are connected by a train.
These deities might be offered up as player characters if people really want, but only available to veterans. Other NPCs are largely generic or joke characters from different worlds. And, most importantly, there is a guild in the center.
In the guild, characters sign up as explorers. They are then offered quests that lead them to leftover pockets of broken worlds. Those are based after certain fandoms. For example, the Exorcist HQ from D.Gray-man could be present, but isolated and infested with undead. A city from Final Fantasy could become a haven for monsters and so on. Each broken world is accessed via portals.
There are surviving NPCs in those pockets, but they are far and few between. The characters are expected to rely on their own resources in order to survive and finish their tasks. For that reason, they'll need to team up and organize small balanced parties that can survive inside those worlds. Obviously, this requires both competition and teamwork, offering up tons of interaction.
How missions work:
Most missions offered by the guild will be done in traditional RPG fair. Destroy monsters, collect specific materials or map an area. It could remind you of Etrian Odyssey or Valhalla Knights, but with a much heavier narrative element because the characters are established icons and not faceless presence.
Most primitive missions won't be moderator-run. The moderator team will offer the basic premise ("kill one dozen monsters" for example) and let people do whatever they want with it. For example, the statistics would be something like:
- Main objective.
- Possible secondary objective.
- OOC information with description of the mission and what can be done about it.
- The players can do whatever they want with the variables.
- Moderators will only be involved if there are requests for NPCs or OOC troubles.
More plot-related missions will be more carefully supervised, but still provide enough freedom for people to shape their own story. They will sometimes be designed for specific teams and sometimes be done for competition. There will be crack missions, tournaments, heavy and dramatic stories and so on. Anything a normal RPG would allow.
Obviously, certain characters are given a choice to remain in town and support the group with other things, such as gathering resources and information, making items or even providing navigator feedback, Mega Man and Persona style.
How do powers work:
You'll wonder about chars like Ace Attorney ones who have no abilities. Well, here's the catch.
Everyone gets a Job crystal, Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy Tactics style. Each crystal offers them a specific class and focus in abilities. Fighter, Monk and Archer crystals are offered enhanced combat skills. Mage and cleric crystals get spells from various schools. Alchemist crystals give one the understanding of crafting healing items and explosives. Thief crystals offer the ability to detect and understand complex traps and locks.
For overpowered chars (think Cloud Strife), specialized crystals are eventually unlocked. They offer more specific abilities, in the style of Samurai, Berserker, Time Mage or Geomancer. So they don't need to pick up a primitive crystal that'll offer futile enhancement to what they already have.
So characters like Lelouch Lamperouge and Phoenix Wright, who are useless in combat, can pick up a Mage crystal and use it for casting offensive spells from the back. A character like Mia Fey can go into white magic or alchemy. Possibilities are endless.
Final note:
Obviously, as the game continues, some worlds will disappear from the map and new ones will become unlocked. There will be a constant influx of relaxed events for people to do, but there will be regular plot and powerful stories focused on specific worlds. It will be laid back and easy to interact with, but with a strong narrative element for the times when people want more.
So, what does everyone think?
