Last night went to the (wonderful)
The Luminaire (Time Out's live venue of the year 2005-06) to see
James Morrison (rather than
James Morrison the aussie jazz guy). First saw him supporting
Martha Wainwright at the end of May, and was struck by his great songs, but particularlyhis incredible voice. He has one of those great husky,rough-round-the-edges soul voices wit incredible power, even if it doesseem rather odd on a 21 year old (and very good looking) white englishguy. One woman at the gig said she'd heard him compared to
Otis Redding, which i think may be slightly overstating it at this stage.
Watch out for him in 2006, he's got a deal with Polydor and the album is out at the end of the week. More info can be found on

Morvern Callar (formerly known as
Hazey Jane. I was reminded partly of
Martha Wainwright, though less angry/forceful, but more of the rather whimsical, floaty style of
Joanna Newsom.
Particular favourite of the set was
Morvern Callar - Cut Your Nails, and also a fantastic, if rather strange cover of the old classic 'My Old Man' (as in My Old Man, said follow the van, and don't dilly dally on the way) which was a lovely end to the set.
You can hear a couple of tracks on her
