The Girl Who Leapt Through Time on DVD

If you keep tabs on what I've written in the past, you'll know that I had posted my opinion piece on The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo) back in March. It's been a while and there's some good news for those of you who aren't into reading subtitles. As of November 18th Bandai Entertainment, one of the larger import companies, has released the movie on DVD with both English audio and Japanese audio with English subtitles. I personally prefer the subtitles because the reflection in the Japanese language is often lost when they translate the audio. Subtitles allow you to understand what they're saying and allow you to hear the feelings expressed by each character.

As a quick synopsis, the story is about a girl, Makoto, an average high school student, who stumbles on a contraption that gives her the ability to leap through time. The story explores how this interesting method of time travel affects her life and how knowing and affecting your future can be both advantageous and troublesome at the same time. If you don't like character development then you might find the movie progresses a bit slowly, but if you enjoy falling in love with the detail and personality of the story then you'd best find a friend and a box of tissues and be prepared to be inspired.

The movie is 1 hour 38 minutes long and is rated PG-13 for "minor violence and risqué humor". I'm not sure about the aspect ratio because Amazon says 4:3 but everyone else says 16:9. If you're into blu-ray, I suspect a blu-ray version may come out later because there is already a Japanese blu-ray version. You can find the DVD on Amazon as a single disk
or a limited edition two disk set
