Don't get a large bird. It'll be a mistake. The truth of the fact is that you are too young to take care of a big bird. I am almost 21 and there is no way I'd be able to take care of out cockatoo by myself. It is like having a 2 year old constantly pulling on your pant leg.

Cockatiels, however, make excellent pets for people who want something bigger than a parakeet. They can talk fairly/mimic sounds, and are more of a responsibility than a parakeet, which is something I like in birds. Not saying I don't like my parakeet. Lorakeets are a challenge, most conures are very loud. Quakers are good, also...if you're looking for a lot of character in a small bird. :)

Quakers and Cockatiels are in a good price range, too. You're looking at around $500 totaly for a cage, and the bird, and some food. Toys are very expensive too. My cockatoo goes through a $30 toy in about 30 minutes. Luckily, we've gotten into the habit of making toys, and buying toys from people who make them, not stupid cooporate chain petstores that sell you crap for a huge load of cash.

The main challenge with a "bigger bird" is keeping them from going neurotic.
