Two days ago a homeless man was bent over in the rain, in the dark, in the rain outside my shop; I was bringing bouquets called 'sunset' containing alstromeria, germinis, huckleberry and passion roses inside for the night. He stood up with a bar of soap in his hand, which was brand new and of excellent quality, I'd say. He turned and said "I don't use soap" and held it out toward me. I said "wow- nice find...that looks brand new". I had replied so he came in to the store to chat about plants while I finished closing. He found a single bloom of salmon coloured alstromeria on the floor and I think he liked that find much more than the soap (I saw him still holding it outside later)
He knew the proper name of many plants.
Today I was pushing a bicycle full of groceries through the rain, in the dark, in the rain outside the Dairy Queen parking lot and he was standing beside a grocery cart full of what looked to be, from my angle, nothing but umbrellas...open umbrellas. He was singing with tasteful vibrato and I thought it was quite nice so I turned and smiled and I'm pretty sure he caught it.
