It's not as dire of an example. But, for me, high school football had finally crossed the line last year.
A local high school senior held a news conference to announce he was committing to Cal.
A news conference.
For a high schooler.
Cameras. State-wide coverage. Everything.
For the high schooler.
The only problem was that this kid had never been recruited by Cal. They never heard of him. But it was so important for this kid to look important that he had the balls to call a news conference. Even worse, the local news agencies somehow found this "newsworthy" enough to broadcast on live TV.
For a high schooler.
For a variety of reasons, I'm a little more forgiving when colleges run their football programs like a pro team (the "revenue" sports pay for all the Olympic-type sports, and those student are in "job training"). However, the ever increasing greed of agents, sponsors and money--in their never-ending quest for "new meat"--have put the high schoolers too much in the media light. In fact, it's created an environment where they crave it. They expect it.
In high school.
