There's only so much we can endure from Bradley James's witless, boorish King Arthur whose reign of stupidity has suppressed any character growth for Colin Morgan's Merlin (aided in his struggles by Richard Wilson's excellent Gaius). Katie McGrath's Morgana has also been relegated to snarling repetitively on the sidelines (though I do wonder if the actress might make a good Wonder Woman).

Whatever the reason, it's frustrating from a fan's perspective because I'm not actually convinced the show has nowhere left to go. Simply by making Arthur aware of Merlin's magic you'd get a good year's worth of stories dealing with this change in their dynamic, and the likely acceptance of sorcery across all of Camelot. If they were brave enough to kill off Morgana, Mordred could also become a brilliant villain for a few years. And considering the show was sold as "prequel" to the more established legend, it doesn't feel like we've reached a point in the story where audiences will be happy to see it go... and can imagine the adult adventures of King Arthur and Merlin for themselves.

We can’t help but feel like you might have known all along that season 5 would be Merlin’s last. After all, the showrunners have been hinting as much for a while, even while telling us to stay optimistic about a sixth season. But if you knew all along, why keep it a secret for this long? Why wait for season 5 to be well over its midway point to let us know? Truth be told, we feel a bit cheated and strung along.
