ACTOR Richard Wilson came back to his hometown to re-open a local library following a six-month £300,000 refurbishment.

The One Foot in the Grave star met library users at the South West Library in Greenock.

The library holds special memories for Richard, as South West was his local library when growing up and where he worked as a volunteer.

Richard said: "It's wonderful to see a council improving library facilities and wonderful to be in this refurbished building.

"I was supposed to be in a play in Glasgow this week but had to cancel due to a minor op but was determined to open this library. It's exciting to be able to say I opened a library.

"It is wonderful to see a computer room that's a window to the entire world, there were no computers when I was a wee boy. "

The library has been transformed and now boasts a learning zone with interactive whiteboard; meeting rooms; an increased number of public access PCs with free wi-fi; a children's area; a young adult area with study space; comfortable seating; and a coffee machine.
