Keen fans of 'Merlin' have been known to dress up in medieval costume to get on to the set in northern France.

'Merlin' fans dress up in medieval costume to get on the set of the BBC drama.

Richard Wilson - who plays physician Gaius in the show - is shocked at how keen watchers travel to northern France, where the programme is filmed, and will try to get on set to see the filming.

He said: "I have never experienced anything like it. We have had fans staying in the same hotel as us and calling our rooms.

"I met one young girl who was a university student and she had come from China to see us. But the most extreme are the ones who dress up in costumes and try to come on set. Thankfully, we can spot them."

However, Richard - who stars alongside Colin Morgan as the titular character - admits working in France has done little to help him learn any more French.

The 76-year-old star said: "We all got lessons when we started here. But I failed. I've stopped saying 'bonjour' and 'ca va' to people because they then think you are French and they start talking at you in French and I can't understand a thing.

"I say hello and hope they revert to English."
