The National Autistic Society Scotland is delighted to announce that highly-respected Scottish actor, theatre director and activist Richard Wilson OBE is our new Ambassador.
The star of BBC’s popular Saturday night drama, Merlin, Richard Wilson will be bringing some magic to his new role with NAS Scotland in a campaigning media launch later this year. His extensive, award-winning career has taken in theatre, film and many of Britain’s best-loved TV shows, including Born and Bred, One Foot in the Grave, Dr Who, Father Ted and Tutti Frutti.
Richard Wilson commented, “I am delighted to support NAS Scotland in its vital work to help create a fairer world for people with autism. An estimated 50,000 Scots have the condition - that’s 1 in 100, and I was shocked to discover that many thousands of people with autism in Scotland and their families still struggle to access the right basic support at the right time.
“Some people with autism require a lifetime of care but many are able to study, work and take part in the community; they just need help and support at certain points. The right support at the right time can make the difference between someone with autism experiencing isolation and related mental health problems and leading fulfilling life and actively contributing to society.
“I am backing NAS Scotland in its work to help people with autism access the same education, employment and social opportunities that most of us take for granted, and I encourage more people in Scotland to do the same.”
Commenting, Dr Robert Moffat, national director of The National Autistic Society (NAS) Scotland said: “We are thrilled that an actor and campaigner of Richard Wilson’s stature is our Ambassador. We strongly believe that with support from a much-respected actor and activist like Richard Wilson, NAS Scotland can reach a wider Scottish public, increase understanding and awareness of autism and help create a world where difference is accepted.”
Born in Greenock, Richard Wilson worked as a research scientist before commencing his extensive and highly successful acting career. He was awarded the OBE for services to drama as a director and actor in 1994.
He is one of the Patrons for Scottish Youth Theatre, Scotland's National Theatre ‘for and by’ young people. A long-time supporter of the Sense charity, he is also one of the Honorary Patrons of the London children's charity, Scene & Heard. Between 1996 and 1999, he was Rector of The University of Glasgow.
