Colin Morgan | 'Parked' @ IFFMH2011[video/interview] + @ Serbian Film Festival

Feb 13, 2012 14:41

dein-streifen.de interviewed Colin and Dominic Wright at the IFFMH in November last year. Earlier today they uploaded a video interview to their YT channel but they also provide a written interview at their website + an additional clip with scenes from IFFMH featuring Colin and the awards ceremony (you can dl the video at the dein-streifen.de website in HiRes!). I've edited the two videos and merged them into one and translated the (German) interview back into English (reading the interview will also help to follow the video interview better since - unfortunately - parts of it are inaudible due to the German narration).

WARNING: the interview with Colin contains a MAJOR SPOILER for the film!

Interview

Colin Morgan has arrived for the premiere of Parked Germany to Mannheim. We spoke to him about his experiences during the shoot.

Was the use of drugs and death in your role hard for you?
It's bizarre. I had to film the dath scene at the end of the first week. I had all the heavy stuff at the beginning and after that it just moved on. If you don't film chronologically you need to know how to find the balance and be prepared for such things to happen. It is always up and down, up and down. Don#t get me wrong: It's funny to lie in a coffin. Such things are just weird, but it is important to shake it off at the end of the day. The next day is a new day.

Did the film help you improve as an actor on?
I think I've gained a lot of experience. With each project you grow as an actor, you learn and you are changing and get better and learn to work under difficult conditions. So I think that one never ceases to learn and develop. We change every day especially with a movie like this. Some things just seem a lot easier after that.

How did they prepare for the role of drug-dependent Cathal?
I've read a lot. I read as much as possible for every project. Reports of people who are or were in the same situation. Families members who've seen one of their family members in such situations. It's interesting to know what makes them tick and how other people perceive it. So you can not only see the movement, but the reason why. Darragh and I were in a drug clinic un Dublin and have talked to some guys that showed us how to have injected drugs. This has really opened my eyes.

Did the movie change you personally?
I think you see homeless people very often but don't how they got there. What is their story? I know Cathal and Fred's story but the real stories from the street, I don't know them. These stories must be told, but nobody wants to hear them.

In Mannheim did not only speak with Colin Morgan, but also with the producer of Parked Dominic Wright.

Why did Director Darragh Byrne tell this story?
It was a story that he wanted to tell a lot. He could have made it as a documentary, there were many similar stories of people living in their cars, the struggle of people with drug addiction. It was clear that the interaction between the two characters who are homeless and so far away from our lives, are a very powerful way is to tell the story.

Why is homeless Fred quite well maintained?
In the case of Fred, it is essential to the character, he is a very proud man, he doesn't want admit to anyone that he is homeless, not even to himself so he works hard at his appearance.

The dressed-up Fred walks through the streets of Dublin. Why are there so many of these meditative scenes in the film?
The character of Fred came back to Dublin, which of course is no longer his home. These scenes are very important, where you see him just walk through his town, which of course is no longer his. Long ago he came from Dublin, he was many years away and now he is back in this place, to which he does not belong.

Was the production of the movie politically motivated?
A small part is probably politically motivated but not the film in general. We were much more concerned about to show the lives and humanity of the characters to the audience.

So you had no social-critical approach?
It is certainly a story about social problems. There are simple facts, as things sometimes are. It's a film about social injustice and sometimes random injustice. I think our goal was to bring the audience into the world of these very special characters.
