Angel & Tony | 'Dancing on the Edge' - Tony Head on his role and Angel Coulby's singing talent

DailyMail: Glamour, murder and all that jazz!
The other big surprise in Dancing On The Edge is actress Angel Coulby stepping up to the microphone to belt out a tune as Jessie Taylor, the Louis Lester Band’s lead singer.

In a shimmering dress and looking every inch the chanteuse, Angel’s fantastic voice will come as a revelation to those who’ve been watching her as Guinevere on the BBC1 adventure series Merlin.

‘The first time I heard Angel belting out a song on set I thought, “Oh my God!”’ says Anthony Head, who played King Uther alongside her in Merlin. ‘I had no idea she could sing like that - I’m not sure she had any idea she could sing like that!

'People will be amazed to find out what a set of pipes she’s got. We used to plonk around on our guitars in our trailers when we were filming Merlin for a bit of fun. When she got the audition for Dancing On The Edge she obviously thought, “Right, I’m going to go for it.”’

Head, 58, plays the oleaginous music promoter known only as Donaldson who discovers the band and introduces them to powerful people, including the royals.

‘Stephen’s exploring a time when so much was changing,’ says Head. ‘There was excitement in the air, and at the same time prejudice was still there in the basic fabric of society.’

The role came at a perfect time for Head, who shot to fame in the Gold Blend ads and as Giles in Buffy The Vampire Slayer. He’d just been told his latest TV show, a US remake of the Channel 4 comedy Free Agents, had been pulled.

‘In America they’ll suddenly say, “Don’t come in to work tomorrow,” which is what happened,’ he chuckles. ‘As soon as I touched down in Britain I got the call to do this. I’ve always wanted to work with Stephen Poliakoff, so it was enormously flattering to be asked.’
