I am an American who lived in Australia for three months one winter (my summer). There are a few things I really wanted and had to have shipped to me. One is root beer. I LOVE root beer. It is practically the only carbonated beverage I drink (I usually drink water other than that). I could find it in the specialty food stores (containing foods from overseas) for an outrageous price but not in any groceries.
Two was Wheat Thins, which are my favorite snacking cracker. I was actually a little surprised at what I perceived to be a dearth of snacking crackers/chips. I guess we're more obsessed with chips (cold chips) than Australians. :)
The third ingredient I wished to find but could not was tinned diced green chiles. They are an essential ingredient in a dish I make with leftover chicken, and I had to have them shipped to me to make them for my boyfriend. I suppose they're a bit of a regional ingredient, as they're incredibly popular in the Southwestern US, but I missed them being readily available. I actually missed readily available Mexican ingredients in general. Again, probably more of a regional thing, as the US borders Mexico, and we thus have lots of Mexican immigrants while Australia...doesn't. :)
Oh yeah! Another one was sticks of butter. I'm accustomed to buying a package of four 1/2 pound sticks of butter for use in baking. I could not find anything like that in Australia. All I could find was spreadable butter/margarine and blocks of butter. You can use the blocks just as well, but the sticks sure make measurements for baking easier!
