Caltrans has announced that they will be repaving Highway 217 both directions from UCSB to Patterson Avenue.
Work will begin tomorrow, Thursday, September 18th, and will continue for approximately three weeks.

That's going to mean 217 is going to be closed for at least some of moving the new freshmen in, doesn't it? This promises to be an ( Read more... )

It means only one lane should be closed at a time so traffic will be sucky.

A bunch of years ago, when I was on the move-in crew for the dorms, the backlog of cars stretched back to the 101. And that was with 217 fully operational. This, this is going to be terrible.

Except that the bottleneck isn't the 217, but on campus.

Sounds like the problems encountered at UCSD this year for move-out and graduation -- the PGA US Open was being played less than a mile away.

Sort of, but it’s not like this isn’t something Caltrans could have put off for, say, two business days. And El Colegio is also being worked on at the same time, so there is in fact no reliable way into campus save one back road that is going to be getting waaaaay too much traffic.

That is, this feels like it was less inconvenient timing and more “I feel like being a colossal dick today; let’s screw UCSB over”. I’m told Caltrans still has a grudge from when the university asked them to build the 217 in the first place, but if that’s what’s motivating this there’s some seriously dumb crap going down.
