Last year's books

56 books last year, plus whatever I've forgotten. Slightly over one a week which is rather slow I reckon. Having a smart phone has slowed things down because I now read the internet on the way to and from work. Perhaps the novelty will wear off a bit and I'll get back to reading. In any case, larges amounts of slipstream, horror, noir and short ( Read more... )

56 books is a good effort, considering I only managed 24 this year if you don't count RPG books. I'm also spending part of my commute each day faffing about a smartphone, rather than reading, and need to get back to reading instead.

Is The Secret History Donna Tartt's? If so, that and maybe the Jeeves books (can't remember which ones I've read) are the only ones on your list I've read at all! What was The City & The City like? Any good?

Pathetically, I haven't read *anything* since I last posted on the subject about three months ago.

That was Donna Tartt, and not such a good read. Far too precious about her subject material, should have killed all of her darlings. TC&TC didn't work either, the set-up, the mystery all fine but the pay-off was poor. I'm not sure I've read a good long form Mieville yet but hopefully one day he'll find the plot to match his imagination and style.

Also "Sherlock Holmes & The Scroll of the Dead" wasn't much cop either. Others in the series are better apparently which shouldn't be hard if they have a) a mystery and b) some detection.

I've reviewed most of these books on the reading tag. Although I now realise I missed out Cyberabad Days, one of the best reads of the year. I'm looking forwards to Dervish House.
