Update

Here is an email I just sent out to close friends. BTW, I'd like to send a special shout-out to Rob, who randomly texted me this morning and immediately called me when he found out I had reached the end of my rope...

So I'm not big on mass emails, as most of you know, but I think it's time to update
y'all. Some of you know some of the story, but I thought you may enjoy this recap
anyhow. Here's what I've been up to.

ADVENTURES IN TEXAS (Maybe I should title this "Lindsey needs Corona. Now.")

The week after finals were out in May, I got a call from an internship I'd been chasing
down in Austin. They wanted me- it was about GD time is all I could say (not to them,
don't worry). They agreed to pay me, so I agreed to move to Austin 1 week later.

The following couple of days I spent online constantly looking for a place to sublet. I
found a place that looked good, and I told the person I was ready to put down a deposit.
All of a sudden I heard, "Oh, sorry. Someone else took it already." Ok. Move on. The
next day I found another place. I told this girl, a UT law student, that I was ready to
put down a deposit if she told me which bank to put it in. Then I had deja vu. "Oh,
sorry. Someone else took it already." Deep breath. I finally found another place (hot
market!) and sent dear Michael with $300 cash to deliver to a girl I had never met before
at a place I'd never been to before. I was desperate. Thankfully, it worked out.

I planned my drive down to Austin to arrive when M was getting back into town for the
weekend on May 19, and I was going to stay in Little Rock, which is a pretty decent 1/2
way point. On the first day, I noticed a funny clunking noise coming from the engine
when I accelerated. Hmmm. I took it into a place in Little Rock the next morning. "We
checked everything and nothing seems to be wrong, so you should be fine to continue down
to Texas." Ok... Thanks dude. At least they didn't charge me. (Oh, and on a side
note- Some guy offered a suggestion for me to have breakfast at Denny's. I'm not
against Denny's, but come on people!)

I arrived in Austin on Friday evening and ignored the car the first weekend since I was
staying with M anyhow. Since I wasn't scheduled to start work until the following
Wednesday, I figured I'd deal with the car on Monday. So Monday I drove it into the
Toyota dealer (dealer sounded better than a random shop cuz I know sooooo many people
here...), who told me my wheel bearing was bad and I was lucky to have made it as far as
I did. Thanks, Mr. Little Rock Shop Guy. Surprisingly, it being the end of a school
year, my bank account was empty, and my credit card was full. I proceeded to cry. My
dad told me he put a check in the mail, but that "the next disaster is on you!" So,
$650, a new wheel bearing, an alignment job, and one rental car later, the car was back
to new...ish... Phew.

Work started out great, but very busy. Apparently they spent $30K on a software package
no one knows how to use, and it didn't come with a manual. Frickin' fabulous people.
They've also been through 4 finance people since September, since after their full-time
quit, they decided to hire part-time temps. I was hired to write a manual for the
lending department loan approval process, but I've been too busy putting out fires to
even think about that. The job story is so long, I have to stop there...

Later in the week I realized rent was coming due on the first, and there are no Key Banks
in Texas. None. (Nada down here, I guess...) Hmmm. Basically I ran around like crazy
to open a WaMu account and sent a check off to my management in B-town, and deposited
cash into my landlord's account here. Crisis averted...for a while...

Now, some of you may remember my Nike saga last year, when I interviewed, attended a
conference, and then got declined for an internship at the last minute ("We just don't
have enough staff, but please contact us for next year."). Anyhow, In February I emailed
Nike again and asked about anything for this summer. Nothing. Tick, tock. Nothing. So
last week, I got an email from a new-since-last-summer staff member asking if I had time
to speak with them about a possible internship for this summer. WTF PEOPLE?!?!
Seriously. Dream internship... Nike... Buh bye... I'm about to wash my hands of them
I think.

Yesterday I was on my way to the gym and had just gotten off the freeway when I noticed
my check engine light was on and my temp gauge was above the H. Then I noticed little
wisps of smoke. Holy Mother of GOD!!! Thankfully the gym parking lot was a block away,
so I pulled in under a tree. I got out of the car, just in case it exploded cuz they do
that in the movies sometimes, and I sat on the curb next to the car, since surely that
would be safe if the car exploded. I then proceeded to cry. I then called my mom. No
answer. Dad had said that the next disaster was on me, but he'll at least know what to
do. He answered, and gave me some ideas of what could be wrong. (While on the phone, I
realized the tree I was sitting under was peeing on me- really the flowers were dropping
nectar drops, but it was bizarre.) I then called Michael, who was in Hawaii this weekend
(yes, he offered to take me, but the tickets were outrageous), about to get onto his
flight back to SFO, where he is currently "stationed." About 20 seconds into the
conversation, he says, "Let me call Brian for you." (His best friend.) 1 minute later I
got a text from M, "Brian is coming. He'll take care of you." So 6 hours, one $90/day
rental car (with extra insurance!) and one Mexican food dinner (with Corona!) later,
Brian had gotten me and my car home, and arranged for his friend to fix it the next day.

Joe, Brian and M's friend, was meeting me at the airport so I could drop of my rental.
On the way down, I got a call from my B-town apt manager that they could not accept my
check since it is drawn on a new account. I was in the middle of informing the girl that
no one had told me that and could they please stop charging me late fees while I get them
more money (I didn't even argue how stupid that is), when a rock (must have been a
boulder) hit the windshield of the rental and created an 8" crack shooting up from the
passenger-side windshield wiper. Frickin' fabulous. (Extra insurance. See above.)
When I got to the gas station where I was meeting Joe to fill up the rental, I bought a
king size chocolate bar and a diet coke, I sat in the car with the a/c on and proceeded
to cry. I stopped when Joe got there. He was able to fix my car, which needed a new
radiator, and he was very kind. He, Brian, and M are my new heroes. I decided to say
eff-it about the apartment people since I have no fight left in me at this point, but I
really need a Corona now. Actually, and IV - a Corona IV. If any of y'all can handle
that, let me know. We can have a Corona IV party and watch the Friends DVDs that the
girl left here for me this summer since there is no TV (not just cable, but really, no
TV). Just stay away from the VHS, cuz she forgot to hide her porn, but that's a whole
other story for a whole other day.

So, for now, my car is running and my apt managers can kiss my butt. Thanks to those of
you who listened to me whine the last couple of weeks. And thanks to the rest of you who
have shown great patience as I have ignored you. Anyhow, let me know what y'all are up
to.
