London transport, diesel engine, 97 horsepower omnibus

Although the small things in life don't matter as much as the big things (the clue being in the words "small" and "big"), they can occasionally be very satisfying.

In the very early hours of Monday morning, travelling home, I sat right at the front of the top deck of the bus and was the only passenger up top (and one of only four on the entire bus). I had just been the biggest winner at our poker game* and had a belly full of very good wine. With a series of great songs blaring on my iPod, I steered the bus through the London streets at top speed, there being very little traffic at half past midnight. And at that moment, for just a few brief minutes, everything fell into place and I felt completely at peace with the world. Music, poker, drunkenness, solitude on the top deck of a bus. Simple ingredients for brief bliss.

*Admittedly it had been an unusually un-swingy game, and my winnings amounted to the grand total of £9.90.

That playlist: "Cry" - Faith Hill; "The Shining" - Black Sabbath; "Heartbroke & Busted" - Magnum; "Just When I Needed You Most" - Ronnie Rae Rivers; "I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That" - Elton John.
