I actually think ZEX would be more confused about the distinction! I mean, ZEX is a human fetishist. The humanoid form really revs his engine, is what I'm saying. But falling for a member of a different species for who they are, not what they look like... well. That's a bit different. I mean he would definitely think Garrus was "human-curious" to at least some extent--he thinks this about all aliens--but he gets that loving someone for being human is different than loving someone in spite of it.

He would also think about threesomes. Constantly. So be careful if you decide to open that door, my friend.

Have things changed for us at all, recently, relationship-wise? Anything new on your end?

Uhhh as for ZEX, well there was the whole thing where the Embryon posted asking for vore volunteers which made Garrus less than happy. ZEX had talked him down to accepting that they were essentially carrion-eaters, which is gross but tolerable. If he ever catches one of them in the act, he will attempt to kill them. He knows that ZEX would respond in kind and he does not care, he cannot be talked down from this. So he realizes he's on sort of borrowed friendship time with ZEX and they could easily become mortal enemies. It's a stressful situation, but, at the very least Garrus knows where ZEX stands.
