train tracks, ugh.

I am surprised by Pittsburgh's ineptitude with snow sometimes. When we went to church at 11 the roads were snowcovered (and the city looked beautiful!). The main streets were clear when we returned home- shoot, they should have been, for a steelers home game!- but this morning I was surprised to find much of the river path near the stadiums to be unclear and therefore nearly impossible for biking, and River Ave. also was unclear but a lot easier than the trail would have been to ride in many inches deep snow...
I was conscious of taking the road in light of train tracks but decided I would take it anyway and make sure my crossing angles was big enough. I went over the first set with relative ease and thought I had the second set of tracks, but it wasn't meant to be. hit the slippery rubber, my angle wasn't big enough and the bike slipped out from under me and skidded well in front of me while I landed pretty hard on my hand and knew. I think I jammed my wrist a little, but not too bad. The bike seems to be okay and thankfully there was no traffic. I know I need to get used to skinny tires, but the tracks and other wide grooves in the path continue to worry me.

Otherwise, it was cool to see snow on the river, and geese huddled together, resting on the ice near "pools" of open water. A male mallard sat in the middle of the path and refused to move as I rode by.

And the Steelers are in the SuperBowl again and this town is absolutely nuts about that team. I wanted to see the Eagles in too, but it's nice to see a long-suffering franchise, the Cardinals, in the big game this year.
