This is a new idea I came up with recently; I post my top three episodes from one of my fandoms and explain why I chose them. Please feel free to suggest a show (though I will only rate it if it is a show that I have watched a lot of and feel that I can give an opinion on).
Day #1 is Nip/Tuck
3. Episode 4X11: Conor McNamara 2026
I chose this one for a few reasons; first of all, it is the only episode (as far as I am aware) that flashes forward into the future; also, when it was made, it looked as though it would be Joely Richardson's last episode (it wasn't, as she returned in Season 5).
The story of the episode partly involves Julia leaving Sean, mainly because she is trying to avoid a hurricane; their relationship was rocky since the second season, but this episode gives them a very nice parting moment, even though the flash-forwards hint that things will get pretty bad at some point.
The flash-forward sequences were very well done, and thankfully, not in any way tacky or cheesy (the only better ones I ever saw were at the end of Six Feet Under, and the actors actually look as though they have aged, which Christian suddenly having an amazing hairstyle. The flash-forwards focus on Sean's disabled son, Conor (he has a deformed hand), aged 20 before he goes for his plastic surgery operation to make his hand look normal. Overall, very moving, and occasionally funny, stuff.
2. Episode 1X10: Adelle Coffin
I chose this one for being one of the most tearjerking episodes on the show, as it revolves around the suicide of Megan O'Hara, whom Sean has been having an affair with. The episode owes a huge debt to Six Feet Under in one scene, as Sean has an imaginary conversation with the head of a woman who committed suicide - while proving he is still competent to work as a plastic surgeon. In the end, Megan commits suicide by overdose, with Sean helping, and the moving scene where she dies while Elton John's "Rocket Man" plays in the background is incredibly moving, as is the funeral scene at the end.
1. Episode 2X12: Julia McNamara
Nip/Tuck pays homage to "Sliding Doors" in this episode. This follows on from Julia drinking too much and taking drugs, and then falling through a patio window. This takes place shortly after Sean kicks her out of the house for revealing that Matt is Christian's son, not his, and she is in a very dark place.
Julia has surgery, and - while under anesthesia - dreams about what life would be like, if she had married Christian. In this dream, transsexual Ava Moore appears as some sort of guide, while Julia also works as a plastic surgeon with Christian, and in a nice tongue-in-cheek moment, McNamara/Troy has become Troy/Troy.
In the dream, events start to resemble real life, with Sean showing up looking for work; in the end, things go horribly wrong, due to various affairs (incidentally, Megan O'Hara makes one of her posthumous appearances in this episode), and things get increasingly surreal.
This all culminates in Julia falling through the patio door again, but in the dream version, she dies, before waking from her dream. At the end of this episode after a lot of drama, she and Christian start to patch things up and see each other as friends.
I like watching Joely Richardson on Nip/Tuck, and this episode gives her a bigger role than any other episodes; also, I'm a sucker for storylines that try a new format, which is why this is #1.
