Not only are murders taking place, but the main character is receiving, profane, threatening phone calls from in her house. While this revelation didn't surprise me that much, as I'd guessed it (it's a well known urban myth), but it's still a very chilling moment in an under-rated movie.
Also, this movie is way better than the terrible remake from 30 years or so later.
