I did speed networking for the first time tonight; it's like speed dating, only rather than trying to get yourself someone to go out with, you network with other professionals for three minutes and then one person moves on. I remember I deliberately found one of the seats where you just got to sit in the same place because I felt lethargic.
I was interesting - there were lots of people in the room and it got very noisy, and although a guy blew a whistle as a signal for people to move on, some people found it difficult to wrap up conversations and I'd see them holding up others while they talked and talked.
The interesting thing was that two of the guys I ended up networking with were ones who had come to my work for job placements in the past, so I caught up with both of them. One of them was hard to recognise at first, probably because last time I'd seen him he'd gone blond and he seemed to have got quite a bit older this time around. One of the guys took ages to sit down because he was chatting to two girls and it was one of those situations where someone starts walking away from a conversation but then just has to get one more remark in, then he turned around and suddenly we realised we knew each other.
I got chatting for ages at the end to a guy from Manchester, who I got on well with - he is looking for work so I hope he can find something. The best thing was that the pub we were in was in the station where I catch the train from after work so I just had to stroll down to the concourse and check where my train was.
