30 Days of TV Challenge, Day 7: Least Favourite Episode of my Favourite Show

Oct 12, 2013 11:15

When considering my least favourite ever episode of House, there was stiff competition from Episode 5x08: Emancipation (note: this is the sole episode I never saw the ending to - thanks, Skyplus, for cutting out about five minutes too soon), which I found to be boring as hell, and full of scenes that were just Taub and Kutner (the two worst House characters of all time; I wanted to yell at the TV when they ended up as regulars on the show) talking to each other. But, the episode that really got me angry was Episode 6x08: Teamwork.

Some background to this one; four episodes ago, the team had to treat a fascist dictator who was ill; Chase hated the guy so much that he deliberately missed out information when advising the doctors, which led to the dictator's death. Over the next few episodes, Chase slowly lost his mind, ending up haggard and tormented by what he'd done, and not telling Cameron who he was now married to.

At the start other "Teamwork", Chase finally came clean to Cameron, so what was the response? The two of them walked into the briefing room and Cameron announced, "We quit!" This was when I inwardly groaned; Cameron had quit twice before and come back, the end of season 3 had including both her and Foreman quitting, plus Chase getting fired. Season 5, despite the fact that it got really good at the end, did turn the words "I quit" and "You're fired" into the worst kind of clichés ever as they got used seemingly every other episode, so I wasn't pleased to hear it AGAIN.

Most of the episode revolved around House choosing a new team of three interns; by the end, Cameron had quit for good (I won't blame the writers for this; Jennifer Morrison evidently wanted to leave, but I was really sad at this - after almost two seasons of episodes where Cameron had become a very minor character, often popping up in one scene at the start of the episode or getting a non-speaking role in a part scene, she was finally getting a lot of screentime on a regular basis). However, the plot required something that made me want to chuck something at my TV; it ended her marriage to Chase, that had lasted all of eight episodes because she decided to move far away from Princeton Plaisboro. Yes, as I diehard shipper who can't bear to see a relationship I liked coming to an end for good, I am impossibly biased against this episode. Did I mention Cameron was my favourite character on the show?

The other thing that made me angry was House's choice of interns; one of them was Chase; at least they kept him; the other two were Thirteen and Taub. While I enjoyed Seasons 6 to 8 a lot, the show was easily at its best when House had his original team of interns - Cameron, Chase and Foreman; the ending of Season 3 really did feel like the beginning of the end.

Oh, and quick diversion...

[Spoiler (click to open)]Foreman taking over from Cuddy as Chief of Medicine was the only really bad thing about Season 8; seriously, Foreman, who just over four seasons ago was an intern???? Surely the hospital had more qualified doctors than him, or did it consist solely of House, Cuddy, Wilson, interns, nurses and surgeons?

Anyway, back on track; I'd wanted to crack open a bottle of champagne when in Episode 6x03: Epic Fail, it seemed like we'd finally seen the end of the next generation interns, with Taub and Thirteen both (as I recall) fired; Kutner had previously committed suicide, so was out of the picture. Thirteen was last seen getting onto a plane and leaving (amazingly, I started liking Thirteen in Season 7; the same can't be said about Taub, who rarely got even remotely interesting). I wasn't best pleased at seeing them both get rehired at the end of this episode, and at the end I just got left with a bad taste in my mouth.

So, yes, I am biased maybe but this is why "Teamwork" is my least favourite House episode.
