Revived: 30 Days of TV Meme - Day 1: A Show that Should Never Have Been Cancelled
I thought I should have a go at this again, since I did it a few years ago but I'll mostly focus on things from the last five years or so, which will mostly allow me to do something original.
For day 1, I'm going to break that rule and say the show that should never have been cancelled is Farscape.
I enjoyed watching that show on BBC2 for all four seasons, and it was still going well when they did cancel it.
So, the premise was that John Crichton was piloting his ship into outer space, when he was sucked into a wormhole and he landed on board a ship that was actually a living being, piloted by extra-terrestrials who were former prisoners, now on the run from the law. It was a decent premise, and had muppets created by Jim Henson's creature shop. The show was at times hilarious and at other times incredibly dark, and it started off being all about stand-alone stories, and then became a show about long plot arcs, that made it into a compelling serial drama.
Season 4 is perhaps not quite as good as what went before, but it was enjoyable enough and shockingly it ended with...
[Spoiler (click to open)]Both principal character being smashed into tiny pieces by an alien who thought they were a threat (trivia: the alien was the show's lead actor Ben Browder wearing a mask!). As it turned out, they weren't dead, due to some weird alien technology and they could be reassembled.
They did wrap up loose ends with the minseries, The Peacekeeper Wars, but I'd have loved to have seen more. Certain characters APPARENTLY died, but it was all offscreen, and the writers could have found all sorts of creative ways to somehow say they didn't die just by using their imaginations. This show should have had a fifth season at least.
