Top Ten Meme - Plus Things I Am Thankful For: Day 2 - Favourite TV Shows

Nov 05, 2012 18:31

I guess regarding being thankful, I should be grateful for my health; I've been feeling a bit unwell lately, but I've known people who have had much worse long-term health problems that I wouldn't want to have.

Anyway, TV shows:

1) The Simpsons - A lot of fanboys/fangirls say they HATE every new episode; I don't, and think the show is still pretty good - for a show that's had 23 seasons, especially compared to Family Guy, which is getting repetetive after 10 seasons and often dependant on the same jokes, slotting in stock footage to pad out the shows and resorting to long scenes of violence just to spice things up, and I don't want to see another fight between Peter and the chicken that takes up about 1/4 of the whole episode.

2) The X-Files - A show in the past now, but still enjoyable to watch repeats, despite most of Season 1 looking really dated. Seasons 8 and 9 aren't quite as good, but still watchable.

3) Doctor Who - Both old and new versions really; the casting of the Doctor is terriffic, despite all the criticism I see of River Song's storyline.

4) Being Human - I don't normally love shows when they lose all their original regulars, but this one is just about managing it. While I was sad at Mitchell leaving, followed by Nina, George and (presumably) Annie, this still seems to look promising because the characters are written so well. I was glad I watched the Pilot.

5) Six Feet Under - A show that I get more out of the more I re-watch it because I spot more things, plus it managed to tread a fine line between black comedy and drama with its story of a funeral home.

6) Person of Interest - Just for the sake of listing something current, I've been enjoying it on Channel 5, and the performances are compelling, plus it has the occasional mildly humourous scene to stop it seeming too serious. It actually seems better than 24, and has mostly stand-alone stories, so you don't need to pay much attention to the backstory (for once).

7) Buffy the Vampire Slayer - I tuned in half way through the Pilot, and was glad I stuck with it through to the end; I just loved the way that Buffy was written, and how tongue in cheek most of it was.

8) Angel - First of all, it just looked like a more adult version of Buffy (but then Buffy became more adult itself), but one of the best spinoffs I've come across; it maintains the same humour seen in Buffy (even though it was increasingly harsh with its culling of characters), and actually outlived the series it spawned from.

9) Red Dwarf - Revived for Series X, this show is actually still pretty good. I like the fact that they've gone back to the original format of just having the main characters roaming around in their ship, and the fact that they don't go over the top with fancy CGI effects.

10) Sherlock - One of the most intelligent shows around, rivalled only by programmes like Person of Interest. I love the fact that there is a good mixture of comedy and drama in this show, and the way Holmes and Watson are written is incredible. While I don't normally enjoy seeing something with 90 minute long episodes, I actually manage to sit through this without much complaint. I can't wait for the conclusion to series two though - one of the drawbacks to its stars both being in The Hobbit.
