He sent the reply off with his school-loaned owl as he pulled his jacket on, hoping it wouldn't be too thin for the short walk across the grounds. Whitehorn wasn't terribly far away, but the winds were cutting fairly chilly these days.
Ten minutes later, as promise, he walked down the hall toward her room, hearing the loud thump of music along the way, although he couldn't quite tell if it was Zoey's place or the neighbors even once he'd gotten close enough to knock on the door.
It wasn't Zoey's room, she had more courtesy than that, sometimes anyway. She was rolling her eyes at the music she could hear as she opened the door.
"They have absolutely no taste. It's ridiculous," she muttered as she stepped back to let Gavin in. She'd turned one of the desks into a makeshift table and was expecting it to cause a roommate war. Which reminded her.... "Here's my disclaimer: my roommate is insane. So, just ignore her if she happens to show up."
"Terrible tasteless neighbors, mad roommate," he repeated dutifully, nodding at the girl as he stepped inside the room a bit further at her invitation, his lips curling slightly. "Got it."
The first few moments he took just to glance around, taking note of the things in the room and the overall feel. Sometimes dorm rooms were surprising given the person, and others, he felt as though he could've drawn them out by hand before ever seeing them.
"I take it she wasn't a friend of yours before Painswick?"
"My life, it's hard. I'm seriously considering trying to make it to honors so I can live with Marlow or something." She'd already tried, and failed, to get a single so....luck of the draw, right? Zoey Ferris wasn't exactly known for her stellar luck
( ... )
He laughed, moving closer as soon as he saw that the food was already there and ready to be dished out. "Nothing to compete with a voodoo caster, that's for sure," he answered at first, shooting a significant look around the room as though checking to be certain she wasn't around to hear it. "Hope she doesn't have any kind of lingering hexes waiting for the wrong word to drop."
He grinned then, and shrugged his shoulders, helping her with the boxes and shifting the plate closer to have it ready.
"I actually managed to land a single this semester. My last roommate was a pretty simple guy, but I never saw much of him."
"She probably does. Girl's....strange and oddly observant. Who knows what she has waiting for me." Maybe she had a tendency to exaggerate, but he roomate really was strange.
Zoey held up two boxes. "Rice? Which kind?" She tilted the boxes to show off the white, her favorite, and the more popular fried.
Her mouth dropped open. How did these people keep getting single? She was woman enough to admit she was jealous. "I officially hate you. I'm not even kidding. You and everyone else who charmed their way into a single."
"White, thanks," he answered, and then lifted his head enough to show off a small, pleased and slightly amused smirk.
"Jealous, are you?" he teased, the expression spreading as he caught sight of her full reaction, dropped-mouth and all. "I didn't exactly charm my way into it except that I've been here a few years to build up some seniority and my marks have kept up. Not all it's cut out to be, though," he pointed out after the fact, partially to soften her hatred and partially because it was the truth.
"Lonely at the top, you know."
ooc: Is it sad that I can't have a character who likes fried rice because I can't stand it? o.O
Zoey dumped some of it on her plate then handed it over. "Maybe I should have asked you for specifics first, now I'm going to have to force this stuff off on someone," she laughed a bit pushing the rejected rice onto the back of the desk. Maybe she could pawn it off on Riley if she promised it was leftovers.
"Extremely jealous, thanks," Zoey nodded and moved on to digging through about four kinds of chicken for the one she wanted., indicating he could just find whatever. She had all the staples.
"I know people in my year who have singles. So your paid dues don't endear you to me." She made a show of scrunching her eyebrows for a moment. "But you really better stop talking about it or I'm moving in with you and there's nothing you can do about it. Don't put it past me." The smirk wasn't too obvious, but it was definitely still there.
ooc: haha! No! Because...that's why Zoey likes it, I ONLY eat white rice with Chinese food.
"Almost feel sorry for it," he answered, gesturing to the poor, discarded fried rice, but only spared it a moment before spooning out some white rice for a bed on his plate.
Garlic chicken and broccoli came next, with a small bit of sweet and sour chicken on the side once he'd spotted some sauce to go with it.
"Yeah, I think some people either have incredibly good luck or some very particular skills if they're getting singles that early," he joked, notching his eyebrow up suggestively. He could think of a couple ways a person might find themselves getting special treatment, and only a couple of them involved having a wealthy family to back them.
"As for all that, I have an extra cot in the room anyway, so you're welcome to crash if you get an extra dose of crazy in here sometime and want company," he added, returning her expression with a bit of a challenging look, meant for fun.
"I have no sympathy for bad rice. It's unfortuante that it's below our surprisingly high standards, but what can you do?" Zoey shrugged and finally tracked down the seasame chicken she was pretty sure she could eat forever and never tire of.
"Best Chinese outside of Asia. You'll see."She climbed up on her bed with just the chicken and rice, leaning over to grab a packet of soy sauce for the rice before she forgot.
She laughed ruefully and pointed at him with a dork. "Yep. That's how they do it. I mean, if you're going to be illicit, you'll need the single to maintain it without suspicion, right?" Zoey tended to think people manipulated or slept their way into most things, but she was a cynic.
"I'm telling you, sugar. Watch it or you'll be stuck with me full time. You have no idea how crazy Elvira gets." Zoey wrinkled her nose but got distracted by her rice seconds later. "But anytime we're hanging out in a room, it's yours from now on...after break anyway." She paused. "What are you doing for break anyway?"
"Haven't decided," he answered with a sigh, and then paused, thinking to himself and then shrugging it off with a grin. "Been doing that a lot lately, not deciding."
It was only the truth, but it didn't trouble him much. In fact, it troubled him little enough that he leaned against the nearby wall, crossing one foot over the other as he took a bite of his chicken coated in rice.
"Don't think you scare me with your threats, though," he added after he'd swallowed, gesturing back at her with his fork as though he'd just remembered the remark. "I'm serious when I say my room gets lonely, and it takes a lot to wear me down, so you're welcome any time you like. So long as you don't tell on me if you catch my paying off my monthly single room dues," he joked, winking at her before returning to his food.
"I'm even jealous of you're indecision." Zoey didn't have time for that. She was crashing with her brother because it was expected if by no one other than him and his roommates and Christmas with her father and his girlfriend. Then there was the competition she needed to get started on, if only picking a partner and finalizing the choreography, which she couldn't do until she picked a partner. It was busier than you'd think.
She hummed around a bit of rice before laughing and shaking her head. "Can't have you being lonely, can we? But if you can put up with me, I'll even pay part of those under the table fees. But you have to let me run a poker tourney every other weekend."
"I'll probably be heading home to see my family, but I haven't committed to it yet. I'll hold out hope that I might skip the whole thing and head off somewhere for a warm island vacation until Christmas Eve rolls around." He laughed a bit to himself, knowing better than to think he'd go through with it, and then shook his head, poking a piece of chicken into the sweet and sour sauce on his plate.
"How can I be sure you can live up to your part of the fees well enough?" he asked, arching an eyebrow and then smirking slowly around his next bite. "I'll take your company as payment. And maybe an automatic invite to the table when the poker night rolls around."
"Warm island vacation," Zoey repeats more slowly than necessary. Damn, that sounds good. "I'm so doing that. Soon. Ish." But she wouldn't becasue Zoey had been to the beach enough times to literally only count them on one hand. She actually wasn't a beach fan, but warm sounded nice.
Zoey batted her eyelashes and pushed her hair behind her ear. It was an innocent act, one she'd learned early on becasue she had an older brother and was generally spoiled even though she'd deny it. "What do you think the poker nights would be for? But you can have my company and a spot at my table. I'll even make sure you win. You know, since the house always wins and all."
Here would be good so I don't have to drag food all over the place. I'm in Whitehorn 315.
